Cheap or Expensive Dental Implants: Which Should You Choose?
Choosing between cheap or expensive dental implants doesn't depend solely on "price," but should primarily consider the complexity of the case and your budget. Both types have different advantages and suitability, as follows:
1. Premium Implants (Expensive)
Often from European or American brands such as Straumann (Switzerland) or Nobelbiocare, Astra Tech (Sweden).
Advantages: Long-term research supporting their quality; uses materials and surface technologies that promote faster and stronger bone fusion.
Suitable for:
Cases with very little bone remaining or requiring bone grafting.
Patients with underlying conditions or slow wound healing (e.g., well-controlled diabetes) who require high stability and reliability.
Front teeth requiring the highest level of gum aesthetics.
2. Standard Implants (Economical/Value for Money)
Often from Asian brands or subsidiary brands of premium Korean implants or Neodent (a subsidiary of Straumann).
Advantages: More accessible price; meets international standards. And spare parts are readily available, making it easy to find someone to take over the maintenance.
Suitable for:
General cases with normal, strong gum and jawbone health.
Molar positions that are primarily used for chewing.
Those who want to limit their budget but still require standard durability.
Precautions and Considerations
Lifespan: If properly cared for and implanted by a specialist dentist, both types of implants can last over 30 years or a lifetime.
Don't choose based solely on the cheapest price: Beware of unusually cheap implants that lack a brand name or supporting research, as they may have long-term problems with the instrument/spare parts.
Characteristics of each implant brand: High-quality implants like Straumann Roxolid are small, reducing the need for bone grafting. They can withstand forces as well as standard implants and have better resistance to infection and implant-induced gingivitis.
Dentist's skill: The success of implant surgery depends 70-80% on the dentist's skill, knowledge, and experience, more than just the brand.
Summary: If budget is not an issue and your case is complex, we recommend choosing a European/American brand for long-term assurance. However, for general molar cases with strong bone, Korean or Brazilian brands are cost-effective and sufficient for most cases.
