When a wisdom tooth has only partly erupted or remains partly covered by gum, a small pocket may form beneath the gum flap. Food, bacteria and plaque can collect in this space, sometimes causing gum irritation, an unpleasant taste, decay or infection.

Clean the area gently as far as you comfortably can, without pressing or picking at the gum flap. If food trapping keeps happening or is accompanied by pain, swelling, an unpleasant taste or difficulty opening your mouth, speak to your dentist for an assessment.

Not every wisdom tooth needs removal. The appropriate approach depends on the tooth’s position, condition and examination findings.
