Most tooth fractures do not happen without warning. They build up over time through habits and situations that are almost always preventable. 🦷

A few of the biggest culprits are chewing on ice or hard sweets, using teeth as tools, grinding or clenching at night without knowing it and leaving old large fillings in place for too long without monitoring them.

The good news is that protection is genuinely straightforward. Avoid hard foods that stress your teeth. Get a custom night guard if you grind while you sleep. Ask your dentist about older restorations that may need updating. Wear a mouthguard for contact sports.

These are not complicated changes. But over the course of years they make a significant difference to the strength and resilience of your teeth.

Most dental problems do not arrive suddenly. They start small, send a few quiet signals and then slowly progress when those signals go unanswered. 🦷

It usually begins with something easy to dismiss. A sensitivity that comes and goes, a mild ache when biting, a gum that feels a little off around one tooth. At this stage treatment is almost always at its simplest.

Left without attention the infection works deeper into the tooth reaching the pulp and eventually spreading to the surrounding bone and tissue. Pain becomes harder to ignore and treatment becomes more involved.

In advanced cases where the damage has progressed too far saving the tooth is no longer possible. And that outcome is almost never inevitable. It is almost always the result of something small that was given too much time.

A cracked tooth does not have one fixed outcome. What happens next depends almost entirely on when it is caught. 🦷

Caught early when the crack is still in the outer layer of the tooth, a crown is often all that is needed. No root canal, no surgery. Just protection and a strong long-term outlook.

If the crack has reached the pulp, root canal treatment cleans and seals the tooth before a crown goes on. Still very treatable with a great success rate.

Once the crack extends into the root things become more complex and options narrow. And if the tooth has split completely, saving it is rarely possible.

The difference between a straightforward crown appointment and losing a tooth entirely can come down to how early you come in. That is not meant to alarm you. It is just the honest truth about how cracks behave over time.

Pick the tooth up by the crown only and never touch the root. Rinse gently with milk or saline if needed but do not scrub it. Try to place it back into the socket if you can. If not keep it moist in milk or between your cheek and gum and get to a specialist immediately.
For teeth that are displaced or fractured do not force anything back into place. Apply gentle pressure if there is bleeding and bring any broken fragments with you.

So let us explain what it is and when it becomes the right option.

An apicoectomy is a minor surgical procedure where the very tip of a tooth's root is removed along with any infected tissue around it. It is done through a tiny incision in the gum under local anaesthesia and most patients are genuinely surprised by how manageable the whole experience is.

It is typically considered when a previous root canal has not fully resolved the infection, when retreatment is unlikely to work due to the shape or anatomy of the root, or when persistent infection at the root tip simply cannot be reached any other way.

A cracked tooth is one of those things that is easy to put off. The pain comes and goes, it does not feel urgent and life gets in the way. We completely understand that. 🦷

But here is what we want you to know. A crack that is caught early almost always means simpler treatment and a much better chance of saving your tooth. Left alone a crack can quietly work its way deeper over time until it reaches the nerve inside and at that point the situation becomes significantly more complex.

The tricky part is that cracks are not always visible. Sometimes the only signs are a sharp twinge when you bite down, a sensitivity to cold that lingers a little too long or a nagging soreness around one particular tooth.

So here are the ones that come up the most:

Will it hurt? No, not during the procedure. Modern anaesthesia takes care of that.

How many visits? Usually one to two depending on your tooth.

Should I just pull it out instead? Almost never. Your natural tooth is worth saving.

Why a specialist? Because what we do every single day is focused entirely on the inside of your tooth. The training, the tools and the outcomes are different.

What if I leave it? An infection will not go away on its own. Treating it early makes everything simpler.
