Bruxism is often labeled as something we should avoid… but the more I learn, the more I believe it is nothing other than the body trying to manage stress.
Just like tears release emotion, jaw activity can release stress.

I was very fortunate to study under pioneers like Prof. Sato and Prof. Slavicek whose studies show that bruxism like activity can actually reduce sympathetic activation and protect the body from stress-related damage.

So instead of fighting our physiology, maybe it’s time to listen to it.
Your jaw may be working hard to keep you in balance. 💛

So much of what we call ‘progress’ moves against nature, not with it.

Hyper-rigid dental materials that don’t yield on impact end up breaking what they’re meant to protect. Treatments that suppress the body’s instinct to grind ignore that grinding is often how the nervous system releases tension. Stiff shoes that squeeze and deform our feet affecting our natural gait and balance. Social norms that tell us to hold back tears confuse emotional regulation with emotional repression.

We engineer away the very feedback loops biology gave us to stay whole. In my practice, whether through biomimetic, airway or functional dentistry, I work to restore those natural pathways to let form, function, and feeling realign.

Nature doesn’t need control. It needs space to remember. 🌱

This week I had the chance to contribute to a multidisciplinary case featured on TV, where several teams came together to support a paraplegic patient’s recovery and quality of life.

In the dental part of the project, it was truly a team effort. My role was to complete the case with a splint designed to serve two purposes: to protect against further dental wear, and to allow the patient to grind with the least possible effort and damage, leading to a reported reduction in headaches and cervical pain.

Even small interventions can have a significant impact when function, comfort, and protection align. Seeing how dentistry integrates within broader care reminds me of the quiet power of teamwork in restoring balance and dignity.

Some stories stay with you.

This one started years ago, when a friend, once a talented dental technician, decided to follow a different passion. He traded the lab for the coffee bar, enrolled in a barista course, and today runs his own coffee shop.

But years of tasting countless coffees, day after day, left their mark. The constant contact with coffee slowly eroded his front teeth, one sip at a time.

When he came to me, because the enamel was already worn, I barely had to prepare his teeth for veneers. What could have been damage became the perfect canvas for a natural restoration.

If you want to taste the best coffee in town, served with this smile, drop by .lisboa

This year at is being deeply fulfilling. I’ve spent most of my days meeting first-time patients and guiding them through the process of restoring their oral health and confidence. My main focus has been on treating malocclusion, helping people regain not only function and balance, but also quality of life.

It’s remarkable how much harmony in the mouth reflects in the rest of the body. Correcting occlusion and addressing teeth grinding often brings a calm that reaches far beyond the jaw.

And when function and balance are restored, aesthetics naturally follow. Veneers become not just about appearance, but about completing a transformation that begins much deeper.
