Why do we sometimes need surgical extraction for a wisdom tooth?

Why does a wisdom tooth need surgery?
When a third molar is impacted — stuck under bone or pushing against the second molar — normal extraction isn’t possible. That’s when we go surgical.
What actually happens?
🔹 Numbing (you don’t feel pain)
🔹 A small flap is lifted
🔹 A bit of bone is removed
🔹 The tooth is sectioned
🔹 Pieces are gently elevated out
🔹 Clean → Irrigate → Stitch
How long does it take?
Usually 15–30 minutes, depending on the position.
Is the recovery bad?
Day 1–2: Swelling & mild discomfort (normal)
By Day 5–7: Mostly healed
Sutures out at 7 days
When should you get it checked?
• Pain that comes and goes
• Repeated food trapping
• Swelling around the gum flap
