Treatment options

Extraction: If the tooth is loose, supernumerary, or damaging the tongue, it may be removed. Extraction can be done with topical anesthetic cream. 

Smoothing: The top edges of the teeth can be smoothed to prevent tongue damage. 

Monitoring: The teeth may be monitored to see if they stabilize on their own. 

No treatment: In some cases, no treatment may be needed. 

Factors to consider

Aspiration risk

If the tooth is loose or supernumerary, there is a risk of the child inhaling it into their airway. 

Feeding difficulties

If the tooth is causing difficulty breastfeeding, this should be considered. 

Tongue ulcerations

If the tooth is damaging the tongue, this should be considered. 

Vitamin K

If the child is under 10 days old, they may need a vitamin K injection to prevent hemorrhagic disease of the newborn. 

When to seek treatment 

A pediatric dentist should be involved early in the management of natal teeth.

X-rays should be performed to assess the teeth.
