Not every tooth decay/dental caries are visible!
Most of the times, the tooth decay hides between the teeth and spreads without being visible. Hence, it is so important to have routine dental visit and x-rays.

Here is a case of a five-year-old girl, who visited me for tooth decay in her cavitated teeth. However, I took x-rays of her other clinically ‘non-decayed’ teeth and found caries everywhere (see picture-dark black shadows between teeth).

Most dentists would drill and fill, however, I used the popular technique used in the UK for tooth 74 which required:

❌ No caries/tooth decay removal
❌ No injection/numbing
❌ No drilling/noise or tooth preparation

✅Stainless steel crown covering whole tooth
✅ A happy patient with no anxiety/fear

This technique works so well with children and is my personal favourite! I have done numerous cases during my training in the UK and following it now in Pakistan 🇵🇰

Yes, it is possible to have your child’s tooth fixed without the traditional drilling and filling :)

Happy princess tooth for my lovely patient 👸

What makes a Paediatric Dentist different?

One of the most important part of our training is non-pharmacological behavioural management. It may sound simple but there are various aspects of behavioural management which needs to be tailored around each child’s specific age and behaviour.

Tell-show-do is the most popular behaviour management technique which works very well with all ages of children. Although my six-year-old niece is very comfortable with me, she was still afraid of the dental environment (swipe left to see). She was reluctant to let me check her teeth on the dental chair. However, with some behaviour management, she ended up enjoying her visit.

As a Paediatric Dentist, I take my time to assess each child and tailor my behavioural management accordingly. Patience and time is the key!

This week, I visited the .magnifisciencecentre centre with my nieces and I couldn’t keep my excitement after checking their informative dental corner.

Children are more receptive to visual aids and learn better using interactive hands on activities. As a Paediatric Dentist, I am always looking for ways to make oral health fun for children. The .magnifisciencecentre is a great initiative to educate and create interest amongst children and even adults. Also, children love when parents and caretakers participate in such acitivities along with them.

I highly recommend everyone to visit. Also, do read the background information and stats given about dental caries/tooth decay.

Have you been there yet? How was your experience?

Even simple procedures can be challenging in Paediatric Dentistry due to the child’s compliance.

A very brave four-year-old boy visited me to get his bottom teeth fixed. After few sessions of acclimatisation, he was able to get both his lower teeth restored using composite in one visit. We played lots of mathematical games (he loves maths!).

It is extremely important to not dive into treatment on the very first visit and invest time in learning your patient’s likes and dislikes. Paediatric Dentistry is all about behavioural management :)

The true value of bitewing radiographs (BWs) still remains underestimated in children.

In our paper, we have assessed how BWs impact the diagnosis of carious primary molars using different thresholds, particularly the d3mft threshold used commonly to quantify caries prevalence in dental surveys.

The paper has been published in the British Dental Journal (BDJ), November 2021 issue. Please find the link below:

Do check it out 😊 happy reading!

Time is very critical in saving a tooth which has sustained injury. Hence, it is important to be aware of on-the-spot essential steps when a child suffers dental trauma. First-aid provided can significantly increase the chances of tooth to survive.

The International Association of Dental Traumatology (IADT) has created posters in different languages to create awareness and help save traumatised teeth. I am sharing their poster in Urdu and English language.

As Dental Professionals, it is our duty to share this information as much as possible and help create awareness.

Share now and save a tooth! Daant bachao 🦷 - swipe for English version

(Special thanks to IADT for sharing the poster and allowing me to spread awareness)

Few weeks ago, a parent asked me if after a tooth injury, the chipped off piece of a broken tooth can be glued back or not. Well, the answer is YES!

The International Association of Dental Traumatology advises that if possible the piece of tooth should be found and kept safe to hand over to the dentist as soon as possible. Therefore, it is essential to seek dental help immediately.

The chipped off piece of tooth can be wrapped in a tissue paper. It is important to keep in mind that if a tooth is broken into multiple pieces or fragments, it cannot be glued back. However, it is always best to try to save the chipped off piece and let the dentist decide the best course of action.

Hence, always find and save the chipped off piece of tooth if possible.

SAVE A TOOTH 🦷
