Classification of Dental Cavities

G.V. Black’s classification categorizes dental caries according to their location on the tooth:

Class I: Cavities in pits and fissures — occlusal surfaces of posterior teeth and pits of molars/premolars.

Class II: Cavities on the proximal surfaces of posterior teeth (premolars and molars).

Class III: Cavities on the proximal surfaces of anterior teeth, without involving the incisal angle.

Class IV: Cavities on the proximal surfaces of anterior teeth involving the incisal angle.

Class V: Cavities on the cervical/gingival third of the facial or lingual surfaces of any tooth.

Class VI: Cavities involving incisal edges of anterior teeth or cusp tips of posterior teeth.

Remember:
I = Pits & fissures | II = Posterior proximal | III = Anterior proximal | IV = Anterior + incisal | V = Cervical | VI = Cusp/incisal tip.
