Healthy teeth and gums are important to your child's overall health. Both the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and the Philippine Pediatric Dental Society Inc. recommend that you bring your child to the dentist on or before his first birthday. Around this time at least 2- 8 baby teeth may be present and your dentist will guide you on achieving good dental habits for your child. 👶🏻🦷

Once your child has a tooth, your dentist may recommend that your child receive fluoride varnish treatments to help prevent tooth decay. This can be done every 3-6 months and the frequency of treatments depends on how likely it is that your child may get a cavity.

This week let's talk about Early Childhood Caries! 👶🏻🦷

Early Childhood Caries (ECC) is defined as the presence of one or more decayed (non-cavitated or cavitated lesions), missing (due to caries) or filled tooth surfaces in any primary tooth in a preschool-age child between birth and 71 months of age.

It is formerly known as nursing caries, baby bottle decay, and night time bottle caries. However, ECC is ACTUALLY a dynamic and multifactorial disease that doesn't just involve bottle-feeding! 👶🏻🍼

See our photos to understand the stages of Tooth Decay and how it can lead to tooth loss if left untreated.
See description of stages below! ⬇️⬇️⬇️

🦷Stages of Tooth Decay

🌟Stage 1: Demineralized Enamel
What Parents see are Chalky White Spots.
The surface of the tooth appear this way because of build-up of plaque and loss of dental minerals on the first layer of the tooth.

🌟Stage Two: Enamel Decay
What Parents see are Flaking Tooth Surface
In this stage the enamel starts breaking and as it continue it can lead to exposure of the second layer of the tooth which is the dentin.

🌟Stage Three: Dentin Decay
What Parents see are yellow or brownish holes on the tooth surface.
The dentin layer exists in between the enamel and the dental nerve or the dental pulp. Once decay reaches the dentin, different level of pain can be felt by the child.

🌟Stage Four: Involvement of The Pulp
What Parents see are less tooth structure and more extensive decay!
The pulp is considered the tooth’s "heart". It is made up of living tissue and cells.

🌟Stage Five: Abscess Formation
What Parents see are gum boils or swelling!
If the pulp gets infected with bacteria, pus then forms which inadvertently kills the blood vessels and nerves in the tooth and can lead to Abscess Formation.

Let's talk about your child's routine dental visits!

⭐You always hear this phrase "See your dentist regularly!" and this is important even for your child.

⭐Yes, those are baby teeth and they will be replaced. But establishing routine dental visits early is your child's foundation for a lifelong of good oral health. Hopefully, your child won't need to wear dentures when he is older... 😉

Since yesterday was National Toothbrushing Day, here's a post we want to share about Toothbrushing! 😁 (Yes, we are a bit late! 😉)

Toothbrushing is the most basic hygiene practice for our oral health but it is notoriously done wrong most of the time. Let's talk about Bad Brushing Habits and may be we can break them this 2021. 🎉🎉🎉

Bad Habit #1
⭐Keeping Your Toothbrush for Too Long
The ADA recommends to change your toothbrush every 3-4 months. Research show that worn out bristles are not as effective in removing plaque. Plus, they are prone to bacterial and fungal growth.

Frayed bristles — it’s time to let go. 🙅🏻‍♀️

Bad Habit #2
⭐Not Brushing Long Enough
Your teeth should be brushed for a full two minutes, at least twice per day. Studies show that the average time most people spend brushing is ONLY 45 seconds.

Next time, try timing yourself. ⌚

Bad Habit #3
⭐Brushing Too Hard & Rough
Nope, brushing harder will not remove those leftover food and plaque. Too much pressure can actually damage your tooth and gums - these are your Toothbrush Abrasions.

So brush your pearly whites oh so gently. 🥰

Bad Habit #4
⭐Brushing Right After Eating
It's actually BEST to wait at least 30 minute before brushing—especially if you have had something acidic like lemons, grapefruit or soda. Dental researchers discovered that within the first 30 minutes after eating, saliva in the mouth naturally reduces the acid level to normal pH.

Just wait a few minutes! Don't rush. ❤️

Let's talk about the BABY TEETH! 😉👶🏻🍼

⭐Baby teeth are called the Primary Dentition or Deciduous Teeth. Our kids have 20 baby teeth and they erupt and fall off at different ages. 🦷 These teeth will exfoliate as the permanent teeth erupts.

⭐What do we mean by Eruption & Exfoliation?
Eruption and Exfoliation are terms given to the normal process of our child's primary teeth.🦷🦷🦷

Tooth Eruption means the tooth "comes out" or "enters" the mouth. Tooth exfoliation is the "shedding off" or "falling out" of the primary / baby teeth. 🪥

⭐ Start brushing your baby's teeth as soon as the first tooth erupts - usually at around 6 months of age or earlier.

⭐Brush the teeth at least twice daily for about 2 minutes using a fluoridated toothpaste. The most important time to brush your child's teeth is RIGHT BEFORE BEDTIME.

⭐Use FLUORIDATED Toothpastes - Kiddie toothpastes containing no less than 1,000ppm of fluoride OR family / adult toothpastes containing 1,300ppm - 1,500ppm of fluoride. ALWAYS CHECK the label!

⭐Use the right amount of toothpaste for your child's age:
👶🏻For children below 3 years, use only a SMEAR amount of toothpaste. Parents or carers should brush the teeth.

🧒🏻For children aged 3 & above, use only a PEA-SIZED amount of toothpaste. Brushing should be done by the parents or carers and / or supervised.

Oh, and our child's permanent teeth will also erupt at different ages and different order. Check our photos to know more! ❤️😘

Yes, early childhood caries is such a preventable disease and yet the prevalence in the Philippines is never below 90%. 😔 Remember oral health care is a big part of the overall health of your child. ❤️

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and the Philippine Pediatric Dental Society recommend the "First visit by the first birthday". Your child should visit the dentist within six months of the eruption of the first tooth or by age one. ☺️
