Your child's jaw is a muscle-driven structure. It grows in response to work.

And most modern kids' diets ask it for almost none.

Smoothie pouches. Crackers. Soft bread. Yogurt. Pasta. All perfectly fine food — and all of it swallowed with barely any chewing.

Compare that to what a jaw evolved to handle: raw vegetables, apple with the skin on, meat that needs real work, nuts, crusty bread.

Chewing is a signal. It tells the jaw to grow wide and strong. Without that signal, the jaw develops less than it could have — which means less room for teeth, and less room for the tongue and the airway behind them.

I'm not asking you to overhaul dinner. I'm asking you to add resistance where it's easy: carrot sticks in the lunchbox instead of crackers, whole apple instead of applesauce, bread with a crust.

Tongue posture and nasal breathing do the most for jaw width. But chewing is the third one, and it's the one nobody mentions.

Comment TEETH and I'll send you my free guide on jaw development and what actually drives it.

𝗖𝗮𝘀𝗲 𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁: 𝙍𝙚𝙩𝙖𝙞𝙣𝙚𝙙 𝙧𝙤𝙤𝙩 𝙛𝙧𝙖𝙜𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙩 𝙖𝙛𝙩𝙚𝙧 𝙬𝙞𝙨𝙙𝙤𝙢 𝙩𝙤𝙤𝙩𝙝 𝙚𝙭𝙩𝙧𝙖𝙘𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣. 🦷
Radiograph revealed a deeply positioned root fragment, which was carefully retrieved through surgical access.

𝙒𝙝𝙚𝙣 𝙨𝙝𝙤𝙪𝙡𝙙 𝙖 𝙧𝙚𝙩𝙖𝙞𝙣𝙚𝙙 𝙧𝙤𝙤𝙩 𝙛𝙧𝙖𝙜𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙩 𝙗𝙚 𝙧𝙚𝙢𝙤𝙫𝙚𝙙, 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙬𝙝𝙚𝙣 𝙘𝙖𝙣 𝙞𝙩 𝙗𝙚 𝙡𝙚𝙛𝙩? 🦷

A retained root tip after extraction does not automatically mean it has to be surgically removed.

𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗼𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝘁 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗻:
• It is associated with infection, pain, or persistent inflammation
• There is a periapical lesion or other pathology
• The fragment is mobile or otherwise causing problems
• It interferes with future treatment
• It can be safely retrieved with an acceptable surgical risk

𝗜𝘁 𝗺𝗮𝘆 𝗯𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗶𝘁 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗻:
• It is small and deeply embedded in bone
• The patient is asymptomatic
• There is no evidence of infection or pathology
• It is not interfering with planned treatment
• Retrieval carries greater risk-such as damage to the inferior alveolar or lingual nerve, sinus involvement, or excessive bone removal

At the end of the day, it’s not simply about whether a root is left behind. It’s about weighing the benefit of removal against the risk of retrieval. Sometimes the safest treatment is to remove it; sometimes, the safest treatment is to leave it and monitor. 🩶
