DENTAL CARE TIPS FOR THE ELDERLY
Taking care of your teeth and gums as you get older can prevent problems like toothaches, tooth decay (cavities), and tooth loss.
A healthy mouth also makes it easier for you to eat well and enjoy food.
A healthy masticatory apparatus ensures that Initial digestion of the food starts in the mouth helping your stomach to properly digest the food with less effort.

Common oral and dental problems in older adults include the following;
1. UNTREATED TOOTH DECAY. Nearly all adults 60 and older have a cavity and 1 out of 5 have untreated tooth decay. Older age is associated with greater prevalence of root caries.
2. Dry Mouth (Xerostomia). Reduced saliva and dry mouth increases the risk for tooth decay.
3. GUM DISEASE. A high percentage of older individuals suffers from gum problems or Periodontal Disease.
4. TOOTH LOSS. Periodontal disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in elderly. Cavities is second. Injuries and oral dental trauma may also cause tooth loss.
5. ORAL CANCER.
6. CHRONIC DISEASE.

Simple Dental Care Advice for Seniors:
1. Brush and Floss Daily. There is no substitute for brushing your teeth after each meal. Daily mouth care is the simplest way to keep teeth and gums healthy, regardless of age. Don't forget to brush your tongue too.

2. Stimulate Salivary Flow. Chew sugarless candy or gum containing xylitol to stimulate saliva production, especially if you have symptoms of dry mouth.

3. Dental Check and Cleaning. Older adults need dental check and cleaning at least twice a year. Doing so will lessen or eliminate gum disease from progressing into serious dental problems.

4. Brush your Dentures. Remove and gently clean your dentures daily. Soak and brush them with a soft-bristled brush and mild soap to remove food, plaque and other deposits. If you use denture adhesive, clean it properly everytime and remove all adhesives to lessen or eliminate bacterial accumulation.
