OPERCULECTOMY

A minor surgical procedure to remove the operculum—the flap of excess gum tissue that partially covers an impacted or partially erupted tooth (most often a lower third molar/wisdom tooth).

Why it’s done?

• Treats pericoronitis: repeated infection, swelling, pain, or bad breath caused by bacteria/food trapped under the operculum

• Relieves discomfort when biting or chewing

• Improves access for proper cleaning and oral hygiene

• Avoids more invasive tooth extraction in suitable cases
