Ayon sa 2001 Guinness Book of World Records, ang Gum Disease ay ang pinaka-laganap na sakit sa buong mundo.
Isa sa mga unang sintomas ng sakit sa gilagid ay ang pagdurugo nito.

Maging alerto kung nagdurugo ang iyong gilagid - - marahil ito ay Gingivitis at kapag lumala, maaaring maging Periodontitis.

Ang Gingivitis ay ang pamumula at pamamaga ng "gingiva" o ang parte ng gilagid na pinakamalapit sa ngipin. Ang Periodontitis naman ay malalang impeksyon ng gilagid na maaaring magpahina sa ngipin na mauuiwi sa pagkalagas nito o pagkabungal.

Pigilan ang paglaganap ng sakit sa gilagid sa pamamagitan ng tamang pagsisipilyo, paggamit ng dental floss, pagbisita sa dentista kung may mga paunang sintomas, pag eehersisyo, pagkain ng masustansya, at pag-iwas sa labis na stress.
