no fear of dental xrays

Many people fear dental X-rays because of “radiation” — but modern dental X-rays actually use extremely low radiation levels.

In fact, a full-mouth series of modern digital dental X-rays may expose you to less radiation than a short airplane flight. Modern digital systems also use up to 80% less radiation compared to older film-based X-rays, while helping dentists detect problems much earlier and more accurately.

Dentists also follow strict safety guidelines called the ALARA principle, which stands for “As Low As Reasonably Achievable.” This means X-rays are only taken when truly necessary and with the lowest radiation dose possible. Additional protective measures may include lead aprons, thyroid collars, digital sensors, and very fast exposure times.

For pregnant patients, dental X-rays are generally considered safe when needed and properly shielded, but it’s always important to let your dentist know if you are pregnant or think you may be.

The small amount of radiation from dental X-rays is usually far outweighed by the benefit of finding infections and disease early — before they become painful, dangerous, or expensive to treat.

Teeth don’t become loose overnight—it’s a slow breakdown happening beneath the surface.

It begins with plaque. When not removed effectively, it hardens into tartar that holds bacteria against the gums. The body responds with inflammation, but over time, this response starts damaging the very structures that support the tooth.

The periodontal ligament fibers—responsible for anchoring the tooth—begin to weaken and widen. At the same time, the surrounding bone gradually resorbs, reducing the stability of the tooth.

Support is lost slowly and silently, until the tooth no longer feels firm in its position.

What makes this process more concerning is that it’s often painless in the early stages, so many people don’t notice it until significant damage has already occurred.

And by then, much of the damage cannot be reversed.

Your smile could protect your brain.🦷

A new study from the American Academy of Neurology finds that people with both gum disease and cavities have an 86 percent higher risk of stroke compared to those with healthy mouths. Even gum disease alone raised stroke risk by 44 percent.

Researchers followed nearly 6,000 adults over 20 years, tracking dental health and other health problems. Poor oral health was also linked to a 36 percent higher risk of heart attacks and other heart problems, while people who visited the dentist regularly were 81 percent less likely to have both gum disease and cavities.

The message is clear: caring for your teeth isn’t just cosmetic — it’s neurological and cardiovascular.

Flossing, brushing, and regular checkups may do more than brighten your smile, as they could help protect your heart and brain for years to come.

emergency dental visit

Crazy but true (Sweden 🇸🇪): A 51-year-old prisoner at a minimum security facility in Vänersborg escaped because of a toothache. He’d been complaining to guards for days but nothing was done. When the pain got unbearable he walked out, got a dentist to pull the inflamed tooth, then voluntarily turned himself in. He was due for release the next day anyway, but because of the escape he got one extra day added. 😬🦷
