Bruxism is the involuntary clenching, grinding, or gnashing of the teeth, which can occur while a person is awake or asleep. The cause of bruxism is not completely understood, but is believed to be a combination of physical, psychological and genetic factors. Daytime clenching or awake bruxism is usually due to emotions such as stress, anxiety, tension or even concentration. On the other hand, sleep bruxism is related to sleep apnea, hyperactivity or side effects of medication.
Bruxism can cause the following:
-Teeth grinding or clenching sound often noticed by or disturb a roommate or partner's sleep.
-Dull headache starting at the temples
-Pain that feels like an earache
-Sore, tired or tight face, neck and jaw muscles
-Clicking or popping of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ)
-Damaged teeth such as flattened, chipped or fractured teeth, worn out enamel
-Increased tooth sensitivity
-Gum recession
The goals of treatment of bruxism is to reduce pain and prevent permanent damage of teeth and reduce the frequency of clenching. Dentists often recommend custom made night guard / mouth guard or appliances such as splint to create a barrier between the upper and lower teeth and prevent further damage to teeth. However, this will not stop the grinding. Other treatment include stress management, behavioral changes and use of medications such as muscle relaxants, botox injections or anti-anxiety medicines.
