🦷 From time to time, patients may need immediate help resolving a simple issue with their braces. Here are some useful tips you can try while at home:

✅️ LONG ARCH WIRE POKING ON THE PATIENT'S CHEEKS, CAUSING MOUTH SORES OR LIMITED FUNCTION
- Orthodontic wax or a clean piece of cotton can be placed at the end of the wire.
- In cases of severe pain or discomfort, a clean and disinfected cuticle cutter or nail clipper may be used to cut the excess arch wire.

✅️ LOOSE BRACKETS, BUCCAL TUBES OR MOLAR BANDS
- If these are not attached to the arch wire anymore, clean with soap and water, dry, and keep until your next visit to your orthodontist.
- Loose brackets still hanging on the wire can be left untouched.

✅️ LIP OR CHEEK IRRITATION
- Rinse with warm salt water to soothe irritated tissue.
- Apply orthodontic wax. Dry off the area. Roll a pea sized amount then apply it to the uncomfortable area and press it gently.

🦷 How to Maintain Oral Hygiene With Braces?

Maintaining proper oral hygiene becomes even more crucial when you have braces. The brackets and wires create additional spaces where food particles and plaque can accumulate.

Here are the basic tips to have good oral hygiene while having traditional braces:

1.) USE A ORTHODONTIC TOOTHBRUSH/SOFT-BRISTLE TOOTHBRUSH

Hold the brush at a 45-degree angle to the gum line, gently brushing in small circular motions.

Make sure to clean all tooth surfaces, including around brackets and wires. Pay extra attention to areas where food particles tend to get trapped, like your molars.

2.) USE A INTERDENTAL BRUSH

Using an interdental brush with braces involves gently inserting the brush between the wire and teeth, above and below the archwire, to remove plaque and food debris. Move it back and forth gently, using it at least once a day in addition to regular brushing to ensure clean brackets and healthy gums.

Their small, flexible heads can effectively clean under wires and around brackets, helping prevent white spot lesions, gingivitis and tooth decay during orthodontic treatment.

3.) FLOSS DAILY

Regular flossing is essential, even with braces. Use a floss threader or orthodontic floss threader to guide the floss under the archwire. Gently slide the floss up and down between the teeth, making sure to clean both sides of each tooth. Repeat this for all teeth, adjusting the floss as needed.

4.) ORAL PROPHYLAXIS/ CLEANING EVERY 6 MONTHS

You may be brushing your teeth twice a day and flossing regularly, however this is not a substitute for an Oral Prophylaxis. A dental plaque can still develop around your teeth and below your gumline.

Make sure to undergo Oral prophylaxis/Cleaning twice a year.

Proper Flossing Technique:

• Start with the right amount of floss: Break off about 18 inches of dental floss. This length allows you to use a fresh section for each tooth.
• Wrap it correctly: Wind most of the floss around your middle fingers, leaving about 1-2 inches to work with.
• Position your hands: Hold the floss tightly between your thumbs and forefingers.
• Guide gently: Slide the floss gently between your teeth. Avoid snapping it, as this can damage your gums.
• Form a “C” shape: Curve the floss around the base of each tooth, making sure to go beneath the gumline.
• Move up and down: Use a gentle up-and-down motion to remove plaque and debris.
• Use a clean section: Shift the floss to a fresh section for each tooth to avoid spreading bacteria.
