TMJ (temporomandibular joint) decompression relates to the body’s circulatory system primarily through blood flow to the head and neck, systemic inflammatory cascades, and autonomic nervous system regulation.
1. Local Blood Supply and Drainage
The TMJ and surrounding muscles of mastication are highly vascularized. The primary blood supply comes from branches of the external carotid artery (specifically the superficial temporal, deep auricular, and anterior tympanic arteries).
Venous drainage flows through the pterygoid venous plexus.
The impact of compression: When the TMJ is compressed (often due to grinding, clenching, or joint displacement), the tense surrounding muscles and compromised joint space can restrict local blood flow. This restriction can lead to localized ischemia (reduced oxygen supply), contributing to muscle soreness, spasms, and facial pain.
The benefit of decompression: Procedures aimed at decompressing the joint and relaxing the jaw muscles help restore healthy local blood circulation and lymphatic drainage, promoting tissue healing.
2. Systemic Inflammation and Vascular Health
Persistent inflammation of the TMJ from disorders like TMJD releases systemic inflammatory markers (e.g., cytokines) into the bloodstream.
When these markers rise, they increase oxidative stress and can impact the flexibility and function of blood vessels throughout the body. Over time, chronic jaw inflammation can contribute to systemic vascular issues, including compromised endothelial function and increased risk for cardiovascular diseases.
3. Autonomic Regulation and Heart Rate
The pain and structural strain of a compressed TMJ can keep the body in a prolonged “fight or flight” (sympathetic nervous system) state.
This state directly affects the circulatory system by elevating heart rates, increasing blood pressure, and lowering heart rate variability (HRV), which is a key indicator of cardiovascular stress.
Joint decompression—via custom oral appliances, physical therapy, or myofascial release—helps shift the body back into a relaxed state, allowing the cardiovascular and autonomic systems to recover.
