When a root canal alone is not enough to fully treat an infection at the root of a tooth, an apicoectomy—also known as root-end surgery—may be recommended. This procedure involves removing the infected tip of the root along with nearby inflamed tissue, then sealing the end of the root to prevent future infection and preserve the tooth.
Using Platelet-Rich Fibrin (PRF) during an apicoectomy enhances healing by promoting bone regeneration, reducing inflammation, and supporting tissue repair.
PRF also helps seal the surgical site and protect against infection, leading to quicker recovery, reduced pain and swelling, and improved long-term success in treating periapical lesions.
