🦷 Tooth Discoloration: Not Every Stained Tooth Is the Same!

One of the most commonly tested topics in Oral Pathology and Pediatric Dentistry is distinguishing between developmental and environmental (acquired) tooth discoloration.

🧬 Developmental Discoloration

Occurs while enamel or dentin is developing.

Common causes:
✅ Dental fluorosis
✅ Tetracycline exposure during tooth development
✅ Amelogenesis imperfecta
✅ Dentinogenesis imperfecta
✅ Enamel hypoplasia

☕ Environmental / Acquired Discoloration

Occurs after the teeth have erupted.

Common causes:
✅ Coffee and tea
✅ To***co
✅ Chlorhexidine mouthwash
✅ Chromogenic bacteria
✅ Trauma and pulpal necrosis

💡 Remember:

Developmental discoloration = color trapped during tooth formation.

Environmental discoloration = color added after eruption.
