Breastfeeding offers powerful benefits in early life. Exclusive breastfeeding during the first 6 months, and continued up to about 12 months, is associated with a lower or neutral risk of dental caries. At this stage, breast milk supports immunity, brain development, craniofacial growth, and overall health. The evidence consistently shows that breastfeeding in infancy contributes positively to both systemic and oral development.

When breastfeeding continues frequently beyond 12โ€“24 months, especially during the night, the risk profile can change. Once primary teeth erupt, lactose in breast milk may be metabolized by cariogenic bacteria to produce acids. During sleep, saliva flow naturally decreases, pH falls, and enamel becomes more vulnerable. If brushing is inconsistent and feeds occur multiple times overnight, the oral environment may shift toward early childhood caries.

Breastfeeding itself is not harmful. The risk arises from prolonged nocturnal feeding combined with plaque accumulation and enamel demineralization. Understanding this balance empowers parents to protect their childโ€™s health without losing the many benefits breastfeeding provides.

After a root canal, your tooth becomes more fragile and prone to fractures.

Placing a crown not only shields the tooth but also restores its strength, function, and longevity ensuring your smile stays healthy and confident.

๐Ÿฆ Did you know cavities can be contagious?๐Ÿฆท

Cavities arenโ€™t just about sugar. Theyโ€™re caused by bacteria. And yes โ€” those bacteria can actually spread from one person to another.

Everyday habits like kissing, sharing spoons, straws, or even putting a babyโ€™s pacifier in the mouth can pass cavity-causing bacteria. The main culprit is Streptococcus mutans, which stick to teeth and produces acids that damage enamel.

Saliva is full of bacteria โ€” some good, some harmful. When two people share saliva, the cavity-causing bacteria hitch a ride in those tiny droplets. Once they reach a new mouth, they attach to the tooth surface, especially where plaque already exists. If sugars are present, these bacteria quickly start producing acid, which weakens enamel and leads to cavities over time.

๐Ÿ‘ถ Babies and young children are most vulnerable. Their teeth are still developing, and once these bacteria settle in, the risk of early cavities skyrockets. Thatโ€™s why parents with untreated tooth decay often see their kids struggle with cavities too.

๐Ÿ˜ฌ Adults can spread it as well, but strong habits like daily brushing, flossing, less sugar, and regular dental visits make a big difference. The bacteria may transfer โ€” but they donโ€™t stand a chance if your mouth is protected.

My 78 yo patient came to us about a crown which he thinks is too white and because of a chipped filling. Since the crown is still good, I convinced the patient to have composite veneers instead on the 4 front teeth to replace the badly stained fillings, eroded teeth and to try to match it with the existing crown. Outcome is not perfect but definitely a great improvement from the old one!
Best of all, patient is very happy! He gave me and my assistant lunch money after for โ€œa job well done!โ€ ๐Ÿ˜€โค๏ธ

Dental caries affects more people than any other chronic disease โ€” including asthma and diabetes. Itโ€™s not just a childhood problem. Cavities can form at any age, and once they start, they donโ€™t heal on their own. The decay process is silent in the beginning, often unnoticed until it reaches deeper layers of the tooth. What makes this more surprising is that caries is almost entirely preventable. With good brushing, flossing, low sugar intake, and regular dental checkups, this disease can be controlled โ€” yet it still impacts billions globally. Itโ€™s a small issue that becomes big if ignored.

Aggressive brushing is a common habit many people develop, thinking it will clean their teeth more effectively. However, using too much pressure while brushing can actually harm your mouth instead of helping it. The gums, especially in the lower front region, are delicate and not designed to withstand harsh scrubbing or hard bristles.

Over time, aggressive brushing causes the gum tissue to wear away, leading to gum recession. This means the gums slowly pull back from the tooth surface, exposing the roots, which are much more sensitive and not protected by enamel. As a result, patients may experience increased tooth sensitivity, root decay, and an unaesthetic appearance. In some cases, even the surface of the tooth near the gumline may begin to wear down.

This kind of damage is not always reversible. Once the gum tissue is lost, it doesn't grow back on its own, and treatment like gum grafting may be required in more severe cases. It's important to understand that more pressure does not mean better cleaningโ€”it simply means more risk of long-term oral health problems.

To brush properly, always use a soft-bristled toothbrush, hold it at a 45-degree angle to the gumline, and use gentle, circular motions. Avoid scrubbing back and forth. Brush for two minutes, twice a day, and donโ€™t forget to be as gentle with your gums as you are with your teeth. Proper technique protects both your teeth and the delicate tissues around them.
