A Cavity Can Affect More Than a Child's Smile.

A systematic review and meta-analysis found that children with untreated tooth decay were more likely to have poorer school attendance and lower academic performance than children without cavities.

Dental pain can make it harder to sleep, eat, concentrate, and participate in class—potentially affecting learning and school success.

Protecting oral health may help support a child's education as well as their overall well-being.

A study published in the Journal of the American Dental Association found that children whose mothers had high levels of untreated tooth decay were more than three times as likely to experience dental cavities compared with children whose mothers had no untreated decay. A similar association was also observed when mothers had significant tooth loss.

This relationship is likely influenced by multiple factors. Cavity-causing bacteria can be transmitted from mother to child during early childhood, while shared dietary habits, oral hygiene practices, access to dental care, and socioeconomic factors also contribute to a child's risk of tooth decay. The study identified maternal oral health as a strong predictor of a child's oral health, not the sole cause.

The findings highlight an important message: protecting a child's smile starts with protecting the mother's. Treating cavities early, maintaining good oral hygiene, limiting frequent sugar exposure, and establishing healthy dental habits at home may help reduce a child's future risk of tooth decay.
