9 Causes of TMJ Pain
TMJ pain affects the jaw joint in front of the ear and the muscles used for chewing. It can develop from muscle strain, joint problems, injury, arthritis, or habits that overload the jaw.
🔹 1. Jaw Clenching
➟ Repeatedly tightening the jaw can overwork the chewing muscles.
➟ This may cause jaw soreness, headaches, and tenderness near the ears.
➟ Clenching often happens during stress or concentration.
⠀
🔹 2. Teeth Grinding
➟ Grinding the teeth, especially during sleep, can strain the jaw muscles and joints.
➟ It may also cause worn teeth, morning jaw pain, or headaches.
➟ A dentist may recommend a night guard in suitable cases.
⠀
🔹 3. Disc Displacement
➟ A small cushioning disc normally sits inside the jaw joint.
➟ If it moves out of position, you may notice clicking, popping, pain, or temporary locking.
➟ Clicking without pain is common and does not always need treatment.
⠀
🔹 4. TMJ Arthritis
➟ Arthritis can affect the jaw joint just like other joints in the body.
➟ It may cause pain, stiffness, swelling, or reduced jaw movement.
➟ Osteoarthritis and inflammatory arthritis can both involve the TMJ.
⠀
🔹 5. Muscle Overuse
➟ Chewing gum for long periods, biting hard foods, or excessive jaw activity can strain the muscles.
➟ Pain may become worse with chewing or prolonged talking.
➟ Resting the jaw and temporarily choosing softer foods may help.
⠀
🔹 6. Jaw Injury
➟ A blow to the face, whiplash, or sudden strain can injure the jaw joint or surrounding muscles.
➟ Symptoms may include pain, swelling, limited movement, or a change in the bite.
➟ Significant trauma should be professionally assessed.
⠀
🔹 7. Bite or Jaw Alignment Problems
➟ Some bite or jaw-position problems may contribute to symptoms in certain people.
➟ However, most TMJ pain is not caused simply by having an imperfect bite.
➟ Unnecessary bite adjustment should be avoided unless a dentist or specialist identifies a clear reason.
⠀
🔹 8. Stress & Anxiety
➟ Stress can increase muscle tension and unconscious jaw clenching.
➟ This may make existing TMJ pain worse.
➟ Relaxation techniques, good sleep, and reducing clenching habits may help.
⠀
🔹 9. Inflammation Around the Joint
➟ The tissues surrounding the TMJ can become irritated or inflamed.
➟ This may cause pain when opening the mouth, chewing, or moving the jaw sideways.
➟ Inflammation can occur after overuse, injury, or joint disease.
⠀
🔹 When to See a Dentist or Doctor
➟ Jaw pain lasts more than a few weeks or keeps returning
➟ The jaw repeatedly locks open or closed
➟ You cannot open your mouth normally
➟ There is significant swelling, fever, or recent trauma
➟ Pain is getting worse despite rest and simple self-care
➟ You develop new numbness, weakness, or a major change in your bite
