Most babies start getting their first teeth around 6 months of age, and by about 2½–3 years, the full set of 20 primary (baby) teeth is usually present.

Here is the typical timeline of baby tooth eruption:

• Lower central incisors – usually appear first, around 6–10 months
• Upper central incisors – erupt around 8–12 months
• Upper lateral incisors – appear around 9–13 months
• Lower lateral incisors – erupt between 10–16 months

• Upper first molars – usually come in around 13–19 months
• Lower first molars – erupt around 14–18 months

• Upper canines (cuspids) – appear between 16–22 months
• Lower canines – erupt between 17–23 months

• Lower second molars – usually appear between 23–31 months
• Upper second molars – the last to erupt, around 25–33 months

Every child develops at a slightly different pace, so a variation of a few months is usually normal.

By the end of this process, most children have their complete set of 20 baby teeth, which play an important role in chewing, speech development, and guiding permanent teeth into the correct position.

If your child’s baby teeth have small gaps between them, that is usually a healthy developmental sign.

Primary teeth are naturally smaller than permanent teeth. The spaces you see are not “gaps to fix” — they are biological room reserved for the larger adult teeth that will erupt later. This is part of normal jaw growth and helps reduce the risk of crowding during the mixed dentition stage.

When baby teeth sit tightly together with no spacing, the jaw may not have enough room for the wider permanent incisors. Studies show that closed contacts in primary teeth are associated with a higher probability of future crowding. It does not guarantee braces — but it is an early risk indicator dentists monitor.

Early dental visits allow us to track jaw development, eruption patterns, oral habits, and airway health. Monitoring growth at the right time is far more effective than waiting until crowding becomes obvious.

A groundbreaking study has revealed that poor dental health does more than cause cavities or gum problems. Research now shows that neglecting oral hygiene can literally accelerate brain aging and contribute to cognitive decline. Gum disease, chronic inflammation, and oral infections have been linked to shrinkage in key brain regions, including the hippocampus, which plays a critical role in memory and learning.

The connection lies in inflammation. Harmful bacteria from the mouth can enter the bloodstream, triggering systemic inflammation that affects the brain. Over time, this silent process can reduce neuronal health, impair memory, and increase the risk of age related cognitive issues.

Maintaining oral health is therefore essential not just for your smile but for your long term brain function. Brushing twice daily, flossing, regular dental check ups, and controlling gum disease are all simple but powerful ways to protect both your mouth and your mind.

Don’t underestimate a small cavity☝️

Don’t underestimate a small cavity☝️

From a small cavity to a life-threatening heart infection — the silent danger many people underestimate

This is not an exaggeration.
An untreated dental cavity can put your life at risk.

what begins as a tiny, painless spot on a tooth can progress into a severe infection with consequences far beyond the mouth.
————————————
WHAT IS A CAVITY, REALLY?

A cavity is not just a hole in a tooth.
It is a bacterial infection.

Bacteria in the mouth feed on dietary sugars and produce acids that gradually destroy tooth enamel — the hardest structure in the human body.

Once this protective barrier breaks down, the infection spreads into the dentin and eventually reaches the dental pulp, where the nerves and blood vessels of the tooth are located.

At this point, the infection is no longer harmless.
————————————
WHEN THE INFECTION IS NO LONGER “JUST DENTAL”

When bacteria reach the pulp, a dental abscess can form — an accumulation of pus that is no longer confined to the tooth.

From there, the infection may:

• Spread to the jawbone

• Invade deep tissues of the face and neck

• Enter the bloodstream

This is where the danger becomes critical.
————————————
SERIOUS AND LIFE-THREATENING COMPLICATIONS

Untreated dental infections have been linked to:

• Infective endocarditis (infection of the heart valves or inner lining of the heart)

• Deep neck infections with risk of airway obstruction

• Brain involvement

• Sepsis, a systemic inflammatory response that can be fatal

These are not rare or theoretical events.
They are well documented in medical and dental literature.
————————————
THE BIGGEST DANGER: CAVITIES ARE OFTEN SILENT

In their early stages, cavities usually cause no pain.

There may be no warning signs.
By the time intense pain appears, the infection is often already advanced.

Waiting until it “hurts” to see a dentist is one of the most common — and dangerous — mistakes.

Advanced dental infections may also cause:

• Fever
• Difficulty chewing
• Sleep disturbances
• Digestive problems
• A significant decline in quality of life
————————————
PREVENTION IS SIMPLE — AND LIFESAVING

Preventing cavities and their complications is effective and achievable:

• Proper brushing after meals
• Daily flossing
• Reduced sugar consumption
• Regular dental check-ups, even without pain

The mouth is a gateway to the body.
A single untreated tooth can become a source of infection that affects vital organs.

🚫 Dental Abfraction: The Hidden Cause of Cervical Tooth Wear

Dental abfraction is a type of non-carious cervical lesion (NCCL) that appears near the gum line, typically as a V-shaped groove. Unlike tooth decay, abfraction is not caused by bacteria but by mechanical stress acting on the tooth structure.

☑️ This stress usually results from bruxism (teeth grinding), malocclusion, or uneven bite forces. Over time, these repetitive flexing forces create microfractures in the enamel and dentin, leading to the gradual loss of tooth tissue. As the lesion progresses, many patients experience tooth sensitivity, especially when brushing or drinking cold beverages.

◽ Other factors that can worsen this condition include aggressive toothbrushing, abrasive toothpaste, and gum recession, which exposes the root surface.

◽ Treatment focuses on eliminating the underlying cause, often through bite adjustment or the use of a night guard to reduce grinding forces. In more advanced cases, composite resin restorations or resin-modified glass ionomers can be used to protect the exposed area and improve aesthetics.

👉 Preventing dental abfraction involves maintaining a gentle brushing technique, managing stress, and scheduling regular dental check-ups to detect early signs of enamel wear before significant damage occurs.
