Tooth loss may be linked to changes in brain health, researchers suggest.

Researchers analyzing data from more than 34,000 adults found that tooth loss was associated with a higher risk of cognitive impairment and dementia. The findings also suggested that the risk increased gradually as more teeth were lost.

Scientists believe several factors may help explain this connection. Missing teeth can reduce chewing efficiency, which may affect brain stimulation and nutrition over time. Gum disease β€” one of the leading causes of tooth loss β€” has also been linked to chronic inflammation that may influence overall health, including the brain.

Researchers additionally observed that older adults with missing teeth who used dentures had lower rates of cognitive impairment compared with those who did not use dentures.

While more research is still needed, the findings highlight the importance of protecting oral health throughout life β€” not only for the mouth, but potentially for healthy aging as well.

A tooth can survive the initial injury β€” then suddenly darken years later.

Dental trauma from childhood falls, sports injuries, accidents, or unnoticed hits to the mouth can silently damage the blood supply and nerve inside a tooth. Over time, the internal tissues may break down, causing the tooth to gradually turn gray, dark brown, or even black.

Many people are surprised when this happens long after the original injury, especially if the tooth never caused severe pain. But discoloration affecting a single tooth is often a warning sign that the inside of the tooth is no longer healthy.

The good news is that dentists can usually diagnose the cause with an examination and X-rays. Depending on the condition, treatment may include root canal therapy, internal bleaching, crowns, or other restorative procedures.

A dark tooth is not always β€œjust staining.” Sometimes it tells the story of an old injury the tooth never fully recovered from.

Scientists are now finding that deep infections around the root of a tooth can trigger chronic inflammation throughout the body β€” and may even interfere with blood sugar control.

These infections, known as apical infections, are often painless and can remain unnoticed for years until they appear on a dental X-ray. Researchers found that people who underwent root canal treatment for these infections often showed lower inflammation levels and improved blood sugar regulation afterward.

This does not mean root canals treat diabetes. But it does highlight something important: oral infections are not isolated problems. Treating an infected tooth may help reduce inflammatory stress on the body and support better overall health.

Many parents worry when they see spaces between their child’s baby teeth. But in most cases, those small gaps are actually a healthy sign.

Baby teeth are naturally smaller than permanent teeth. As a child grows, the jaws also grow and create extra space to prepare for the much larger adult teeth that will erupt later. That’s why dentists often like to see some spacing between baby teeth during early childhood.

When baby teeth are very tight together with little or no spacing, there may be less room available for the permanent teeth in the future. This can increase the likelihood of crowding, overlapping, or crooked teeth as adult teeth begin to come in.

Of course, spacing alone cannot perfectly predict future orthodontic needs, but it can give important clues about how the teeth and jaws are developing.

Sometimes, the gaps parents worry about today are actually helping create a healthier smile tomorrow.

Most people think wisdom teeth only become a problem when they hurt.

But impacted wisdom teeth can quietly damage the healthy tooth beside them long before any pain starts.

When a lower wisdom tooth grows sideways or gets stuck under the gums, it can trap bacteria and food between the teeth β€” creating an area that is extremely difficult to clean properly.

Over time, this can lead to cavities forming on the back side of the second molar, often hidden deep below the contact point.

A clinical study published in the Journal of Clinical and Experimental Dentistry found that distal decay in the second molar occurred in about 1 in 4 cases involving impacted lower wisdom teeth. The risk was especially high when the wisdom tooth was horizontally impacted and touching the neighboring tooth near or below the gumline.

The dangerous part is that this damage can remain completely silent in the early stages.

Many patients discover the problem only after:
β€’ deep decay develops
β€’ food gets stuck constantly
β€’ the second molar becomes painful
β€’ root canal treatment is needed
β€’ or the healthy tooth beside the wisdom tooth can no longer be saved

That’s why regular dental X-rays are important β€” especially if you still have impacted wisdom teeth.

Sometimes, the tooth that hurts the least can cause the most damage.
