Maintenance of Removable Dentures

Proper care and maintenance of removable dentures are essential to keep them clean, comfortable, and long-lasting. Here’s a complete guide:

1. Daily Cleaning

Remove and rinse after eating:
Rinse dentures under running water to remove food particles and debris. Handle them carefully to avoid dropping them.

Brush daily:
Use a soft-bristle toothbrush or a special denture brush with non-abrasive denture cleanser (not regular toothpaste, which can scratch dentures).
→ Brush all surfaces, especially those that contact the gums.
Rinse thoroughly:
After cleaning, rinse dentures well before placing them back in the mouth.

2. Overnight Care

Remove dentures before sleeping:
This allows your gums to rest and prevents fungal infections (like denture stomatitis).

Soak overnight:

Place dentures in clean water or a denture-soaking solution.
→ Avoid hot water, which can warp acrylic dentures.

3. Oral Hygiene for the Mouth

A. Clean your gums, tongue, and palatewith a soft toothbrush or gauze daily to stimulate circulation and remove plaque.
B. Rinse with warm salt water occasionally to maintain oral tissue health.

4. Regular Dental Check-Ups

Visit your dentist at least once a year (or as advised) for:
A. Denture fit evaluation (to prevent sore spots or looseness)
B. Professional cleaning and polishing
C. Oral cancer and soft tissue examination

5. Handling and Storage

a. Always handle dentures over a folded towel or basin of water to prevent breakage if dropped.
b. Keep dentures moist when not in use to prevent drying and distortion.

6. What to Avoid

a.Do not use bleach or abrasive cleaners (they can damage and discolor dentures).
Avoid ,hot water and microwave cleaning

b.Don’t wear ill-fitting dentures— they can cause ulcers or bone resorption.

7. Signs You Need Professional Attention**

* Pain or sores under dentures
* Clicking or looseness
* Difficulty chewing or speaking
* Cracks, chips, or discoloration

Teeth whitening is the process of lightening the color of your teeth by removing stains and discoloration from the enamel and dentin. It doesn’t make teeth “perfectly white,” but it can noticeably brighten your smile by several shades.

How Long Whitening Lasts?

Results can last 6 months to 2 years, depending on:

Diet (coffee, tea, red wine)

Smoking/vaping

Oral hygiene habits
Regular maintenance helps preserve results longer.

Composite restorationis a type of tooth-colored dental filling used to repair decayed, chipped, fractured, or worn teeth. The material used is called composite resin, a mixture of plastic and fine glass particles.

Composite restorations are commonly used for:

1. Filling cavities caused by tooth decay
Repairing chipped or crackedteeth
2. Improving the appearance of discolored or misshapen teeth
3. Closing small gaps between teeth
4. Replacing old amalgam (silver) fillings** for cosmetic reasons

Advantages of Composite Restorations:

Aesthetic: Matches the natural color of teeth
Minimally invasive: Requires less removal of healthy tooth structure
Strong bond to the tooth structure
Versatile: Can be used for both front and back teeth
Quick: Often completed in a single visit

How is it done?

1. Tooth preparation– Decay or damage is removed.
2. Etching and bonding – Tooth surface is treated to help the resin bond.
3. Placement – Composite is applied in layers.
4. Curing– Each layer is hardened using a special curing light.
5. Shaping and polishing – The final shape is adjusted and polished for a natural look.

Disadvantages / Limitations

1. May stainover time (especially with coffee, tea, smoking)
2. Less durable than crowns or metal fillings (can wear down faster in large restorations)
3. Technique-sensitive – Success depends on moisture control and proper placement

A metal framework denture, typically made from cobalt-chromium alloys, has several advantages over acrylic (plastic) dentures.

Here are the key advantages:

1. Strength and Durability

Metal frameworks are much stronger than acrylic, allowing for a thinner and more compact design.
Less likely to fractureor break compared to acrylic dentures.

2. Better Fit and Comfort

Thinner framework means more comfort for the patient.
Metal clasps and rests allow for better adaptation to natural teeth, improving stability.

3. Improved Retention and Support

Clasps - engage natural tooth undercuts for better retention.
Occlusal rests- help distribute chewing forces to the teeth instead of the soft tissues.

4. Less Bulk

Because metal is stronger, it can be used in thinner sections, making the denture less bulky and easier to tolerate.

5. Biocompatibility

Cobalt-chromium alloys are generally well-tolerated by oral tissues and have low allergy potential

6. Better Oral Hygiene

Metal frameworks are easier to clean and less porous than acrylic, leading to less bacterial accumulation.

7. Longevity

With proper care, metal dentures can last many years, often longer than acrylic ones.

06/09/2025

A number of conditions can arise from impacted teeth, especially impacted wisdom teeth (third molars), which are the most commonly affected. Here are some possible complications and conditions:

🔹 1. Pericoronitis

Definition: Inflammation of the gum tissue around a partially erupted tooth (often a wisdom tooth).

Symptoms: Pain, swelling, bad taste, difficulty opening the mouth (trismus).

🔹 2. Dental Caries (Tooth Decay)

Impacted teeth are harder to clean, which can lead to cavities on adjacent teeth or on the impacted tooth itself.

🔹 3. Periodontal Disease

The area around impacted teeth may develop gum disease, especially if debris and bacteria collect.

🔹 4. Cyst Formation

Dentigerous cysts (fluid-filled sacs) can form around the crown of an unerupted tooth.

Can cause bone loss, tooth displacement, or jaw fractures in severe cases.

🔹 5. Damage to Adjacent Teeth

Pressure from impacted teeth can damage the roots or alignment of neighboring teeth.

🔹 6. Crowding or Misalignment

Impacted teeth can push other teeth out of alignment, leading to orthodontic issues.

🔹 7. Infection or Abscess

Bacterial infections can occur in the soft tissue surrounding the impacted tooth, sometimes spreading to other areas of the jaw, neck, or head.

🔹 8. Jaw Pain or TMJ Issues

Chronic pressure or inflammation around the impacted tooth can contribute to temporomandibular joint (TMJ) discomfort.
