This is why maintaining good oral hygiene is crucial during braces treatment.

Braces can straighten your teethโ€”but poor oral hygiene during treatment can lead to cavities and gum disease.

Braces make it easier for plaque and food particles to collect around brackets, wires, and along the gumline. If these areas are not cleaned thoroughly every day, harmful bacteria can multiply, increasing the risk of white spot lesions (early enamel demineralization), tooth decay, and gum inflammation.

Those chalky white marks that sometimes appear after braces are not just stainsโ€”they are areas where the enamel has permanently lost minerals. Without timely care, these weakened areas can progress into cavities, while plaque buildup around the gums may lead to gingivitis and, if left untreated, periodontal disease.

Maintaining excellent oral hygiene during orthodontic treatment is just as important as wearing the braces themselves. Careful brushing around every bracket, daily interdental cleaning, fluoride use when recommended, and regular dental check-ups help protect the teeth while they are being moved into their ideal position.

A successful orthodontic treatment is not measured only by straight teethโ€”it is measured by straight, healthy, cavity-free teeth with healthy gums.

A simple liquid treatment applied in seconds may help many young children avoid dental drilling.

A major U.S. randomized clinical trial found that 38% silver diamine fluoride (SDF) arrested tooth decay in more than half of treated baby teeth when applied every six months, providing strong clinical evidence for this minimally invasive approach to managing early childhood cavities.

Unlike conventional cavity treatment, SDF is brushed directly onto the decayed tooth and requires no drilling, injections, or sedation. The treatment combines the antibacterial properties of silver with the remineralizing effects of fluoride, helping arrest active decay by reducing cavity-causing bacteria and strengthening softened tooth structure.

Researchers found that more than half of the treated baby teeth had their cavities successfully arrested, reinforcing SDF as an effective evidence-based option for managing early childhood tooth decay. By helping preserve baby teeth until they naturally fall out, SDF may reduce the risk of pain, infection, and the need for more invasive dental procedures in many young children.

As minimally invasive dentistry continues to advance, studies like this are expanding treatment options that make dental care more comfortable, accessible, and effective for children.

Breathing Through the Mouth During Sleep May Increase Cavity Risk

During sleep, saliva production naturally decreases. If breathing occurs through the mouth instead of the nose, the mouth can become even drier, reducing saliva's ability to wash away food particles, neutralize harmful acids, and help repair early enamel damage.

A recent systematic review found that children and adolescents who breathe through their mouths tend to have more dental plaque and gum inflammation, with limited evidence suggesting an association with dental caries. Although more high-quality research is needed, reduced saliva and a persistently dry mouth may create conditions that allow cavity-causing bacteria to thrive.

Maintaining good oral hygiene, staying well hydrated, and addressing persistent mouth breathing may help reduce cavity risk and support long-term oral health.

Brushing Your Teeth May Help Protect More Than Your Smile. It May Also Help Protect Your Heart.

Most people brush their teeth to prevent cavities and gum disease.

But growing research suggests that this simple daily habit may also be associated with better cardiovascular health.

A study published in the International Journal of Cardiologyโ€”found that adults who brushed their teeth at least twice a day for two minutes had a significantly lower risk of major cardiovascular events. In contrast, people who brushed less than twice daily and for less than two minutes had about a threefold higher risk of cardiovascular death, heart attack, heart failure, or stroke, even after adjusting for multiple cardiovascular risk factors.

Scientists believe one possible explanation is inflammation. Poor oral hygiene allows dental plaque to accumulate, increasing the risk of gum disease. Chronic gum inflammation may enable oral bacteria and inflammatory molecules to enter the bloodstream, where they could contribute to blood vessel dysfunction and cardiovascular disease. However, it is important to remember that this study shows an association, not proof that brushing itself prevents heart disease. Other healthy lifestyle factors may also play a role.

The good news is that brushing twice a day with fluoride toothpaste for at least two minutes is a simple, inexpensive habit already recommended for maintaining healthy teeth and gums. It may also support overall health as part of a heart-healthy lifestyle.

The spots you see are cavities forming where the braces used to be.

Braces can transform a smile, but they also create hundreds of tiny plaque-retaining areas around brackets and wires. When plaque remains on the teeth, bacteria produce acids that gradually dissolve enamel, allowing cavities to develop beneath and around the brackets.

Once the braces are removed, the damage becomes visibleโ€”often as permanent white spots, brown stains, or cavities. The teeth may be perfectly aligned, but the enamel has already been compromised.

Orthodontic treatment moves teeth. Oral hygiene determines whether those teeth stay healthy for life.

This is why even a small cavity should never be ignored.

A cavity may look small on the surface, but that doesn't always reflect the amount of damage hidden inside the tooth.

Unlike enamel, the dentin beneath it is softer and less mineralized, allowing tooth decay to spread more quickly once bacteria break through the outer protective layer. Because this process often occurs silently, many cavities continue to grow without causing pain or obvious symptoms.

By the time a tooth starts to hurt, the decay may have already reached the pulpโ€”the living tissue that contains nerves and blood vessels. At that stage, treatment is often more complex and may require root canal treatment or, in severe cases, tooth extraction.

The good news is that most cavities are highly treatable when detected early. Regular dental checkups and timely treatment can preserve more of the natural tooth, reduce treatment costs, and help prevent avoidable complications.

A tooth infection doesn't just affect the tooth.

Research found that successfully treating apical periodontitis with root canal therapy was associated with improvements in blood sugar regulation, glucose levels, and lipid metabolism over a two-year follow-up.

Chronic tooth infections can trigger persistent low-grade inflammation, allowing inflammatory signals to circulate throughout the body. As the infection resolved, researchers observed improvements in metabolic biomarkers linked to cardiovascular health.

While root canal treatment is performed to eliminate infection and save a tooth, these findings add to growing evidence that treating oral disease may also support overall systemic health.

๐Ÿฆท Brushing alone isn't enough to protect baby teeth.

Here are 10 evidence-based habits every parent should know.

Together, these simple steps can significantly reduce the risk of early childhood cavities and help build a healthier smile from the very beginning.

1. Clean the gums before the first tooth appears

Wipe your baby's gums with a clean, damp cloth after feeds. This helps reduce harmful bacteria and establishes healthy oral care habits early.

2. Use fluoride toothpaste from the first tooth

โ€ข Rice-sized smear for children under 3 years
โ€ข Pea-sized amount for children aged 3โ€“6 years

When used in the recommended amount, fluoride safely strengthens enamel and helps prevent tooth decay.

3. Avoid frequent sugary drinks and bedtime bottles

Once teeth erupt, avoid putting your child to bed with milk, juice, or other sweetened drinks. It's the frequency of sugar exposureโ€”not just the amountโ€”that increases the risk of cavities.

4. Watch for white spots

Chalky white areas near the gumline are often the earliest visible sign of tooth decay. At this stage, the damage may still be reversible with fluoride, dietary changes, and early dental care.

5. Schedule the first dental visit by age one

The first dental visit should take place by your child's first birthday, or within six months after the first tooth erupts. These early visits focus on prevention, risk assessment, and guidance for parents.

6. Protect baby teeth from injuries

As children begin crawling and walking, falls become more common. Trauma to baby teeth can sometimes affect the developing permanent teeth underneath.

7. Stop thumb sucking and pacifier use by age 3

Prolonged habits may contribute to an open bite, a narrowed upper jaw, and future orthodontic problems.

8. Nighttime is the highest-risk period

Saliva production naturally decreases during sleep, making teeth more vulnerable to decay. If nighttime feeding is necessary after teeth erupt, clean the mouth afterward.

9. Parents' oral health matters too

Cavity-causing bacteria can be passed from caregivers to children. Avoid sharing spoons, cleaning pacifiers with your mouth, or sharing toothbrushes. Maintaining good oral health as a caregiver also helps protect your child.

10. Never underestimate baby teeth

Untreated decay can cause pain, infection, difficulty eating, speech problems, premature tooth loss, and may increase the risk of future dental disease.

Healthy permanent teeth begin with healthy baby teeth. Early prevention is simpler, safer, and far less expensive than treating dental problems later.

After all, kung pareho namang โ€œbunot,โ€ โ€œpasta,โ€ o โ€œroot canal,โ€ bakit minsan magkakaiba ang presyo?

The simple answer is:

Just because two patients need the same procedure doesnโ€™t mean the treatment will have the same level of difficulty.

For example, a tooth extraction can be very simple for one patient.

Pero sa ibang pasyente, the tooth might be badly broken, impacted, infected, or positioned in a way that requires more time, more instruments, and a more complex approach.

Pareho silang extraction.

Pero magkaiba ang condition.

Magkaiba rin ang treatment requirements.

Thatโ€™s why dental fees are not based solely on the name of the procedure.

Theyโ€™re also influenced by:

๐Ÿฆท The condition of the tooth and surrounding tissues
๐Ÿฆท The complexity of the case
๐Ÿฆท The materials that will be used
๐Ÿฆท The instruments and equipment required
๐Ÿฆท The time needed to complete the treatment
๐Ÿฆท The clinical expertise needed to achieve a safe and predictable result

Sa dentistry, hindi siya parang restaurant menu na may iisang price para sa lahat. ๐Ÿ‘Ž

Every smile is unique.

Every patient has different needs.

And every treatment plan is customized based on what is actually happening inside the mouth.

Thatโ€™s why a proper consultation is important.

Because before we can determine the most appropriate treatmentโ€”and its corresponding feeโ€”we first need to evaluate your specific dental condition.

At the end of the day, youโ€™re not just paying for the procedure itself.

Youโ€™re also paying for the diagnosis, treatment planning, sterilization protocols, quality materials, professional expertise, and the care needed to achieve the best possible outcome.

โœจ Because in dentistry, one fixed price simply cannot fit every patient.
