😴 This is why persistent mouth breathing should never be ignored during childhood.

Breathing through the nose does much more than deliver air to the lungs. During childhood, normal nasal breathing helps support healthy airway function, proper tongue posture, balanced jaw growth, and normal facial development.

When mouth breathing becomes a long-term habit—often because of allergies, enlarged adenoids or tonsils, or chronic nasal blockage—it may influence how the face and jaws develop over time.

Research has linked persistent mouth breathing with a narrower upper jaw, a high-arched palate, crowded teeth, increased overjet, and a longer, narrower facial appearance in some growing children. These changes are thought to occur because the tongue rests lower in the mouth instead of against the palate, reducing the natural support needed for normal maxillary development.

Not every child who breathes through the mouth develops these features, but the risk is higher when the habit persists during the years of active growth.

Nasal breathing also allows air to pass through the nasal passages, where nitric oxide is naturally produced. This molecule helps improve airflow, oxygen exchange, and circulation. Studies have also associated chronic mouth breathing with poorer sleep quality, lower oxygen efficiency, and daytime problems such as reduced concentration and fatigue.

Facial growth is influenced by many factors, including genetics and overall health. However, persistent mouth breathing should never be considered "normal." Identifying and treating the underlying cause early can help support healthier facial growth, better sleep, improved airway function, and may reduce the need for more complex orthodontic treatment later.

Healthy facial development begins with healthy breathing habits.

A VERY COMPLICATED TMJD/ORTHO CASE 😅

The patient initially consulted a dental clinic for the extraction of her wisdom tooth. However, the procedure was deferred due to the complexity of the case, particularly her severely limited mouth opening. She was subsequently referred for TMJ and occlusal management.

At the time, her mouth opening was so restricted that even a spoon could barely fit. Eating became a daily challenge, forcing her to remain on a soft diet and significantly impacting her nutrition and quality of life.

Fast forward a few years—through comprehensive TMJ and orthodontic management, the patient achieved a significantly improved mouth opening, enhanced function, and relief of her jaw symptoms. As a result, she was finally able to undergo successful wisdom tooth extraction.

The wisdom tooth extraction was the patient’s original goal, but restoring function, increasing VDO, improving quality of life, and relieving TMJ symptoms turned out to be the real win. 😁

“Next time nalang magpapa-adjust 😬”

Real talk: kung may braces ka, bawal petiks! 👇

🦷 1. Clean like a pro
Hindi pwedeng toothbrush lang 😆
Toothbrush + floss + mouthwash = iwas gingivitis & bad breath

⏰ 2. Monthly adjustment is a must
Skip mo ‘to? Expect mo rin na mabagal (or walang) progress 😬

⚠️ 3. Mas prone sa sira ang ngipin
Dahil sa braces, may mga singit na mahirap linisin—kaya doble ingat!

😬 4. Wear your elastics!
Hindi ‘yan design lang 😅
Sila ang susi para mas mabilis umayos ang bite mo

🍗 5. Iwas sa matitigas na pagkain
Bye muna sa chicharon & matitigas na pagkain 🥲
Ayaw mo naman matanggalan ng bracket diba?

Reminder:
Kung gusto mo maagang matanggal braces mo… consistency is key 🔑🦷
