🚨 MYTH: Braces Can Cure TMJ

πŸ’¬ β€œDoc, if I get braces, will my TMJ go away?”

❌ Not necessarily.

Current scientific evidence shows that braces are NOT a primary treatment for Temporomandibular Disorders (TMD/TMJ).

🦷 Braces are excellent for:

βœ… Straightening teeth
βœ… Correcting bite problems when indicated
βœ… Improving function and esthetics

❗But they are not designed to treat jaw joint disorders.

If your TMJ symptoms improved after braces, it doesn’t necessarily mean the braces cured them. TMD is multifactorial, and symptoms may improve with:

βœ”οΈ Conservative care
βœ”οΈ Splint therapy
βœ”οΈ Physical therapy
βœ”οΈ Stress management
βœ”οΈ The natural course of the condition

🦷 The right diagnosis comes before the right treatment.

Before starting braces for TMJ, seek a comprehensive evaluation by a dentist with advanced training in Orthodontics and Temporomandibular Disorders (TMD) & Orofacial Pain.

🦷 4 Common TMJ Myths… Debunked by Science

Misinformation about Temporomandibular Disorders (TMD) is everywhereβ€”from social media to well-meaning advice from friends and family.

Unfortunately, believing these myths can delay the right diagnosis, create unnecessary anxiety, and even lead to inappropriate treatment.

Let’s separate myth from fact.

βΈ»

❌ Myth #1: Everyone needs braces after wearing a TMJ splint.

βœ… FACT:

A stabilization splint is primarily used to reduce pain, protect the teeth and jaw joints, and improve jaw function.

Once symptoms improve, many patients do not require braces.

Orthodontic treatment is recommended only when there is a separate orthodontic indication, such as crowding, malocclusion, impacted teeth, or other bite problems.

βΈ»

❌ Myth #2: Braces cause TMJβ€”or can cure TMJ.

βœ… FACT:

Current scientific evidence shows that orthodontic treatment (braces) neither causes nor cures Temporomandibular Disorders (TMD).

Braces are designed to correct tooth alignment, improve bite relationships, and enhance oral healthβ€”not to treat TMJ disorders.

While some patients with TMD may also require orthodontic treatment for crowded teeth, bite discrepancies, or other orthodontic problems, braces should never be prescribed as a primary treatment for TMJ pain unless there is an independent orthodontic indication.

Likewise, improvement of TMJ symptoms during orthodontic treatment does not necessarily mean that the braces cured the TMD.

🦷 The key to successful TMJ management isn’t bracesβ€”it’s an accurate diagnosis and an evidence-based treatment plan tailored to the underlying cause of the symptoms.

βΈ»

❌ Myth #3: Jaw clicking always needs treatment.

βœ… FACT:

Not every jaw click is a disease.

Many people have painless jaw clicking for years without pain or limitation.

Treatment is generally recommended only when clicking is accompanied by pain, jaw locking, limited mouth opening, or impaired jaw function.

βΈ»

❌ Myth #4: Your bite is the primary cause of TMJ.

βœ… FACT:

Current evidence shows that TMD is multifactorial.

While the bite may influence jaw function in selected cases, factors such as bruxism (teeth grinding), clenching, stress, muscle overuse, trauma, sleep disorders, and joint pathology often play a much larger role.

That is why every patient deserves a comprehensive evaluation rather than a one-size-fits-all diagnosis.

βΈ»

πŸ’™ The Right Diagnosis Comes Before the Right Treatment.

Jaw pain is a symptomβ€”not a diagnosis.

Successful treatment begins with identifying the true source of the pain, not simply treating the bite or the teeth.

If you’re experiencing:

βœ”οΈ Jaw pain

βœ”οΈ Jaw clicking or locking

βœ”οΈ Teeth grinding or clenching

βœ”οΈ Frequent headaches or facial pain

βœ”οΈ Difficulty opening your mouth

βœ”οΈ Neck pain associated with jaw discomfort

Our team provides evidence-based, comprehensive, and personalized care for patients with TMJ disorders, jaw pain, bruxism, headaches, facial pain, and other orofacial pain conditions.

08/07/2026

🦷 β€œRoot Canal? It Won’t Last…” πŸ€”

One of the biggest myths in dentistry is that a root canal is only a temporary solution.

This case tells a different story.

These X-rays were taken 5 years apart after root canal treatment.

Five years later, the tooth remains functional, comfortable, and radiographically stable, with healthy surrounding bone and no signs of recurrent infection.

This is exactly what successful, evidence-based dentistry aims to achieveβ€”not just treating today’s pain, but preserving your natural tooth for many years to come.

βΈ»

❀️ A Root Canal Doesn’t Just Remove Pain…

It gives your tooth a second chance.

When the infected nerve inside the tooth dies, bacteria multiply within the root canal system and begin destroying the surrounding bone.

Root canal treatment works by:

🦷 Removing infected tissue

🦷 Eliminating bacteria from inside the canals

🦷 Thoroughly disinfecting the tooth

🦷 Sealing the canal system to prevent reinfection

Once the source of infection is removed, your own immune system begins rebuilding the surrounding bone.

The dentist treats the infection.

Your body does the healing.

βΈ»

🌱 Healing Continues Long After the Procedure

Many patients expect healing within a few weeks.

In reality, bone regeneration is a slow biological process.

Healing may continue for:

πŸ“… Several months

πŸ“… One year

πŸ“… Two years

πŸ“… Or even longer in large lesions.

The most rewarding follow-up appointments are not the day after treatment…

They’re the ones years later, when the tooth is still healthy and serving the patient exactly as nature intended.

βΈ»

πŸ“ˆ The Goal Isn’t Just Saving the Tooth…

It’s keeping it healthy for decades.

A properly treated root canal isn’t meant to β€œbuy time.”

With excellent technique, a well-sealed restoration, and good oral hygiene, many root canal-treated teeth remain functional for decades.

Numerous long-term studies have shown that root canal treatment has a success rate of approximately 90–95% when performed properly and followed by an adequate permanent restoration.

That’s why preserving your own tooth is almost always preferable to extracting it whenever possible.

βΈ»

πŸ” What Determines Long-Term Success?

Long-term success isn’t luck.

It depends on:

βœ… Accurate diagnosis

βœ… Complete cleaning and disinfection

βœ… Proper shaping of every canal

βœ… Three-dimensional sealing of the root canal system

βœ… A high-quality permanent restoration or crown

βœ… Excellent oral hygiene

βœ… Regular dental check-ups

When all these factors work together, your natural tooth can continue functioning comfortably year after year.

βΈ»

🦷 Why Do We Take Follow-up X-rays?

Because successful treatment isn’t measured on the day the procedure is finished.

It’s measured years later.

At every recall appointment we look for:

βœ… No pain

βœ… Comfortable chewing

βœ… No swelling

βœ… Healthy gums

βœ… Stable surrounding bone

βœ… No signs of reinfection

This 5-year follow-up demonstrates something every dentist hopes to see:

A tooth that continues to serve its patient quietly, comfortably, and successfully.

That’s the true measure of success.

βΈ»

❀️ Whenever Possible…

Nothing replaces your natural tooth.

Dental implants are excellent when a tooth cannot be saved.

But if your own tooth can be preserved through evidence-based treatment, it is often the best long-term solution.

Modern dentistry isn’t just about treating disease.

It’s about preserving what nature gave you.

😳 β€œDoc, I’m just missing one tooth…”

That’s what this patient thought. 😌

But after a careful examination and advanced 3D CBCT imaging, the real story was revealed…

β—πŸ¦· An upper canine trapped inside the jaw
β—πŸ¦· Two permanent front teeth that never developed (congenitally missing upper lateral incisors)
β—πŸ¦· Four impacted wisdom teeth hidden beneath the gums

😲 The surprising part?

She had been living with these hidden dental problems for years without realizing how complex her case really was.

πŸ’‘ This is why not every β€œmissing tooth” needs an implant, and not every smile can be corrected with braces alone.

Some smiles require a carefully planned combination of orthodontics 🦷 and oral surgery πŸ₯ to achieve the safest, healthiest, and most beautiful long-term result.

βœ… The right diagnosis always comes before the right treatment.

πŸ“Έ Swipe through the images and discover what advanced 3D CBCT imaging can revealβ€”findings that may not be obvious on routine dental X-rays.

🩻 When necessary, we refer patients to trusted diagnostic imaging centers for CBCT scans to ensure the most accurate diagnosis and the safest, most effective treatment plan.

πŸ’™ Do you have a tooth that never came in? A β€œmissing” tooth? Or impacted wisdom teeth?

The problem may be more than what meets the eye. πŸ‘€

🚨 Coming Soon…

We’ll reveal this patient’s complete diagnosis, treatment plan, and the step-by-step approach behind transforming this complex case into a healthy, functional, and confident smile.

04/07/2026

😟🦷 β€œThe Filling Was Just Done… So Why Did the Tooth Still Need a Root Canal?”

A filling should relieve painβ€”not leave you needing more treatment. 😟

This 26-year-old accountant came to us for a second opinion after experiencing persistent pain just 2 weeks after receiving a composite filling elsewhere.

After a thorough examination and digital X-rays, we discovered the real problem:

❌ Deep decay remained beneath the previous restoration.
❌ The cavity preparation was inadequate, resulting in a poor seal.
❌ Bacteria continued to spread, causing irreversible infection of the dental pulp.

Instead of another filling, 🦷 Root Canal Treatment (RCT) was necessary to save Tooth #16, while Tooth #15 also required replacement of its defective restoration.

✨ The lesson? A filling is only as good as the diagnosis, cavity preparation, and technique behind it.

βΈ»

🦷 Why Proper Cavity Preparation Matters

A successful restoration requires more than simply placing composite.

It requires:

βœ… Complete removal of infected tooth structure
βœ… Proper cavity design and isolation
βœ… Strong adhesive bonding and an excellent seal
βœ… Careful composite placement and finishing

⚠️ Leaving decay behind can lead to:
β€’ Persistent tooth pain 😣
β€’ Recurrent cavities 🦠
β€’ Root Canal Treatment 🦷
β€’ Tooth loss in advanced cases 🦷

βΈ»

🦷 When Is Root Canal Treatment Needed?

Not every deep cavity requires a root canal.

Whenever possible, we always aim to preserve the tooth’s natural vitality. πŸ’™

However, RCT becomes necessary when the pulp has developed irreversible inflammation or infection, causing:

πŸ”Ή Persistent toothache
πŸ”Ή Lingering sensitivity to hot or cold
πŸ”Ή Pain when biting or chewing
πŸ”Ή Deep decay reaching the nerve
πŸ”Ή Dental abscess or infection

⏰ Early treatment can often mean the difference between a simple filling and saving your tooth with Root Canal Therapy.

04/07/2026

🦷 Think Your Teeth Stay Straight Forever After Braces? Think Again. 😱

One of the biggest mistakes patients make after braces is not wearing their retainers.

The result?

❌ Teeth slowly shift back.
❌ Crowding and gaps can return.
❌ Years of orthodontic treatment can gradually be lost.

The truth is simple: Retainers are just as important as braces.
β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”-

Today, we delivered custom upper and lower Wraparound Hawley retainers to our wonderful 18-year-old international student, helping protect the beautiful smile she worked so hard to achieve. 🌍✨

A successful orthodontic treatment doesn’t end on debond dayβ€”it ends when your smile remains healthy, stable, and beautiful for life.

β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”-

πŸ› οΈ What Makes Our Retainers Different?

Unlike many practices where retainers are fabricated entirely by an outside laboratory, our removable orthodontic retainers are personally handcrafted, customized, and adjusted by our Board-Certified Orthodontist.

βΈ»

🦷 Why Are Retainers So Important?

βœ… Prevent orthodontic relapse

βœ… Maintain proper tooth alignment and bite

βœ… Allow the surrounding bone and gums to stabilize

βœ… Protect the time, effort, and investment you’ve made in orthodontic treatment

βΈ»

⭐ Which Retainer Is Best?

Every smile is unique, and the ideal retainer depends on your orthodontic diagnosis, bite, and lifestyle.

πŸ† Wraparound Retainers β€” Our Preferred Gold Standard

For many orthodontic patients, Wraparound retainers remain our preferred removable retainer.

Unlike conventional Hawley retainers, the wire wraps around the teeth without crossing the biting surfaces, allowing your bite to settle naturally while maintaining outstanding long-term stability.

βœ”οΈ Outstanding long-term stability
βœ”οΈ Durable and long-lasting
βœ”οΈ Comfortable to wear
βœ”οΈ Adjustable and repairable
βœ”οΈ Allows natural settling of the bite
βœ”οΈ Excellent long-term clinical success

πŸ† Hawley Retainers β€” The Time-Tested Gold Standard

For more than a century, Hawley retainers have remained one of the most trusted removable retainers because of their durability, adjustability, repairability, and predictable long-term results.

For these reasons, Wraparound and Hawley retainers continue to be regarded by many orthodontists as the gold standard removable retainers for long-term orthodontic retention.

✨ Clear (Essix) Retainers

Nearly invisible and highly esthetic, clear retainers are an excellent option for many patients.
However, they may wear out faster, require replacement more frequently, and completely cover the biting surfaces, which may limit natural settling of the bite in some patients.

πŸ”’ Fixed (Bonded) Retainers

Bonded behind the front teeth, these provide continuous retention without relying on patient compliance.

Many patients still benefit from wearing removable retainers at night for maximum long-term stability.

βΈ»

⏰ How Long Should You Wear Your Retainer?

According to current orthodontic evidence…

For life.

🦷 First 6-12 months: Wear your retainers full-time (except while eating and brushing).

πŸŒ™ Afterward: Wear them every night indefinitely.

πŸ’™ Remember…

Braces create your smile.
Retainers protect it for life.
A few hours of retainer wear every night can protect years of orthodontic treatment.
