Most cavities don’t start with pain.
That’s what makes them dangerous.

A cavity can quietly grow inside a tooth for months while you feel completely normal. In the early stage, decay only affects enamel — the outer layer of the tooth that has no nerves. So even while acid is slowly damaging the tooth, there may be no warning signs at all.

Pain usually starts much later, when the cavity reaches deeper layers closer to the nerve. That’s why many people suddenly develop severe toothaches “out of nowhere.” In reality, the decay was already advanced long before the pain appeared.

Some cavities are especially hard to notice because they form between teeth, under old fillings, or in areas you can’t easily see. Even without pain, signs like sensitivity, food getting stuck repeatedly, dark spots, bad breath, or a rough feeling on a tooth may signal hidden decay.

One of the biggest myths in dentistry is that “if it doesn’t hurt, it’s fine.” Unfortunately, by the time a cavity becomes painful, treatment is often more complicated. Early checkups and X-rays can detect cavities before they turn into infections, root canals, or tooth loss.

Most children start losing their baby teeth around the age of 6, and by about 12 years, most of the primary teeth have been replaced by permanent teeth.

Here is the typical timeline of baby tooth loss:

• Lower central incisors – usually the first to fall out, around 6–7 years
• Upper central incisors – fall out around 6–7 years
• Lateral incisors – shed between 7–8 years

• First molars – usually lost around 9–11 years
• Canines (cuspids) – fall out between 9–12 years

• Second molars – the last to fall out, around 10–12 years

Every child develops at a slightly different pace, so a variation of a few months is usually normal.

Baby teeth may be temporary, but they play an important role in guiding permanent teeth, supporting proper chewing, speech development, and maintaining space in the jaw.

Wisdom teeth, also known as third molars, are the last teeth to appear in the back of the mouth. Because they often grow in tight spaces or at unusual angles, they can create several oral health problems. One common issue is pericoronitis, where the gum around a partially erupted tooth becomes swollen and irritated, making chewing and mouth opening uncomfortable.

Another reason dentists recommend removal is the formation of deep gum pockets around nearby molars. Poorly positioned wisdom teeth can trap food and bacteria, leading to cavities and gum damage in both the wisdom tooth and the healthy tooth beside it.

In some cases, impacted wisdom teeth may also form cysts or abnormal tissue growth, which can slowly damage the jawbone and surrounding structures. Removing problematic wisdom teeth early can help protect nearby teeth and maintain better overall oral health.

Root canal treatment can eliminate tooth infection — and may also improve your body’s metabolic health.

New research from King’s College London shows that successfully treating apical periodontitis — a deep infection at the root of a tooth — is linked to measurable improvements in blood chemistry.

The study, published in the Journal of Translational Medicine, followed patients for two years after endodontic treatment.

The findings were clinically significant.

After successful root canal therapy, patients demonstrated:

• Improved blood sugar control
• Reduced glucose levels
• Healthier cholesterol and fatty acid balance

These changes suggest better metabolic regulation over time.

Why does a tooth infection affect the rest of the body?

Bacteria inside an infected root canal can trigger persistent low-grade inflammation. Inflammatory mediators may enter the bloodstream, contributing to insulin resistance, altered lipid metabolism, and increased cardiovascular risk.

Using advanced metabolomic analysis and spectroscopy, researchers tracked systemic biomarkers. As the dental infection resolved, inflammatory markers declined gradually.

This reinforces the growing evidence connecting oral infection with systemic health.

Root canal treatment is not only a tooth-saving procedure. By removing a chronic source of bacterial inflammation, it may help restore healthier metabolic balance.

The broader implication is clear: oral health and general health are biologically connected.

Managing dental infections promptly may contribute to long-term protection against metabolic and cardiovascular disease.

This is why we advise na ipatanggal ang wisdom tooth kapag nagpabraces kayo.

Parang nag-uumpugan silang lahat, lahat gustong maging bida, ganern! 😅

Kaya if sinabi ng dentist mo na kailangan tanggalin ang wisdom tooth mo, and you want your braces journey to be worth it, trust the process. Ipatanggal mo na para mas maayos, mas predictable, at mas maganda ang outcome ng treatment mo. Yun lang byeeee🥰
