It feels good when a patient says:

โ€œMy coworker comes here. They said our HMO is accepted here, so I decided to come too.โ€

The reason I continue to accept HMO patients, even when their coverage is limited, is simple.

I want them to know that they have a dental clinic they can visit, a dentist who will listen, and someone who will care for themโ€”even if their HMO only covers limited services.

Not every treatment may be covered, and I understand that some patients have been postponing dental care because they cannot afford procedures that are not included in their benefits. So whatever their HMO covers, I provide wholeheartedly.

At the same time, I also understand that some patients can afford to pay but still continue to negotiate or request that treatments not covered by their HMO be included.

However, I choose to be fair and transparent.

I will provide everything allowed under their HMO coverage, but I will not disregard the value of my work and the services I provide.

For patients who truly rely on their HMO, providing covered care is more than just a service.

I consider it a small way of helpingโ€”a quiet form of charity work that I do right inside my clinic. ๐Ÿฆท๐Ÿ’™

Dental care should be accessible to those who need it. However, if a treatment is not covered by an HMO, it is also important to save for it and recognize its value, especially when the patient has the ability to pay.

Not every need can be included in an HMO, and not every service can be provided for free. Understanding oneโ€™s coverage, setting aside a budget for necessary treatment, and respecting the value of professional services are also part of being responsible for oneโ€™s own health.

Sometimes, giving what we can is enough to make a difference. But setting the right boundaries is also part of being a responsible and fair healthcare professional.
