When gums begin pulling away from the teeth, the roots underneath become exposed, often causing sensitivity, discoloration, and a rough texture near the gum line. This condition, known as gum recession, is commonly linked to inflammation caused by plaque buildup, aggressive brushing, gum disease, or aging. If ignored, the supporting bone around the teeth may gradually weaken, increasing the risk of loose teeth and long term oral problems.

Coconut oil pulling has gained attention as a natural oral care practice because coconut oil contains lauric acid, a compound with antibacterial properties. Some studies suggest swishing coconut oil in the mouth may help reduce plaque and harmful bacteria while supporting overall gum health. Unlike harsh chemical rinses, oil pulling may be gentler on the oral microbiome, although it should not replace brushing, flossing, or professional dental treatment.

People who try this method usually swish virgin coconut oil for 10 to 15 minutes before brushing. Some also add clove or tea tree oil, though essential oils should be used carefully and in very small amounts. An extraordinary dental case in Brazil revealed an 11 year old girl with a total of 81 teeth. This included 31 extra teeth, a rare condition known as hyperdontia.
What made this situation even more unusual was the absence of any identified genetic syndrome, despite multiple tests. The extra teeth caused crowding and disrupted normal development.
Managing this required a coordinated approach involving oral surgeons, orthodontists, and prosthodontists to remove excess teeth and restore proper function and alignment effectively.
