An avulsed tooth is a dental emergency where a tooth is completely knocked out of its socket, typically due to trauma like a fall, sports injury, or accident.
Immediate Emergency Steps
If a permanent tooth is knocked out, follow these
steps immediately:
Handle by the Crown: Pick up the tooth only by the white top part (crown). Never touch the root, as this can damage the vital fibers needed for reattachment.
Rinse Gently: If the tooth is dirty, rinse it briefly (maximum 10 seconds) with cold running water, milk, or saline. Do not scrub, scrape, or use soap.
Try to Replant: Carefully place the tooth back into its socket, ensuring it faces the right way. Gently bite down on a piece of gauze or a clean cloth to hold it in place.
Store Properly (if replanting isn't possible): Keep the tooth moist. Place it in a container of cold milk (the preferred choice), saline, or the person's own saliva. Do not use plain water, as it can kill the root cells.
Seek Immediate Dental Care: Contact an emergency dentist or go to the nearest emergency room immediately.
Time Sensitivity: Success drops significantly after one hour. Go to the nearest dental clinic in your area ASAP.
