A TOOTH HAS BEEN REMOVED—NOW PROTECT THE HEALING SITE!
A successful tooth extraction doesn’t end when the tooth comes out. What you do during the next few days plays an important role in how well the area heals.
After an extraction, a blood clot forms inside the socket. This clot acts like a natural protective covering while new tissue begins to develop. Disturbing it too early may cause bleeding, delayed healing, or dry socket (alveolar osteitis).
🦷 10 IMPORTANT THINGS TO AVOID AFTER TOOTH EXTRACTION
1️⃣ Avoid vigorous rinsing for the first 24 hours.
Give the blood clot time to stabilize. Strong rinsing may loosen or remove it.
2️⃣ Avoid forceful or repeated spitting.
The pressure created inside your mouth can disturb the extraction site.
3️⃣ Stay away from very hot, hard, or crunchy foods.
Choose soft, cool or lukewarm foods while the area is still sensitive.
4️⃣ Say NO to straws. 🚫🥤
The suction may disturb the blood clot and increase the risk of dry socket.
5️⃣ Avoid smoking and alcohol. 🚭🍺
These can interfere with normal healing and may increase the risk of complications.
6️⃣ Leave the extraction site alone.
Do not poke, press, or repeatedly touch the socket with your tongue or fingers.
7️⃣ Take it easy for the first 24–48 hours.
Avoid strenuous exercise, heavy lifting, and activities that may cause the area to bleed again.
8️⃣ Keep your mouth clean—but be gentle. 🪥
Brush your other teeth normally, but avoid aggressive brushing directly over the extraction site during early healing.
9️⃣ Follow the instructions and medications given by your dentist. 💊
Do not change, stop, or add medication without proper advice. Follow your dentist’s instructions regarding gauze, cold compresses, diet, and oral hygiene.
🔟 Pay attention to warning signs. ⚠️
Severe or worsening pain, persistent heavy bleeding, fever, pus, increasing swelling, or persistent foul taste or odor should be evaluated by your dentist.
