Yes it is a thing. And yes, it is bad.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
When it comes to brushing 🪥 your teeth, there is such thing as too much of a good thing. Brushing twice a day and for 2 minutes each time is essential in keeping your teeth and gums healthy but brushing too hard can actually lead to sensitive teeth and receding gums 😢
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Also known as toothbrush abrasion, over brushing can “scrub” away the enamel as well as damage and push back the gums, exposing the sensitive root area 🥴 Once the enamel and gum are damaged, there is no turning back. Unlike your skin, hair or nails, tooth structure and gums cannot “grow” back. As a result, weakened enamel and receding gums can lead to an increased risk of tooth decay and gum disease.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
So how hard is too hard? Well, first things first ✅ Always use a soft bristled tooth brush. But to know how much pressure to apply, hold the toothbrush handle with your thumb and index finger and gently brush your teeth & gums. The amount of pressure you can generate from that grip is how much should be applied. And if you’ve tried it, you’ll know it’s not much at all ☺️
