MESIODENS: An Unaesthetic Center of Attention
By definition, a mesiodens is an extra tooth that is present in between the two central incisors (your two centermost upper teeth). Studies have shown that this condition is more common in males rather than females.
CAUSES: This still remains unclear but few have been suggested such as genetics, syndrome association, but the most accepted is the Hyperactivity Theory which basically means that increased activity or overgrowth of Dental Lamina (the one responsible for tooth formation) results in production of extra teeth.
COMPLICATIONS: Delayed eruption of permanent teeth, displacement or rotation of adjacent teeth, crowding, root abnormalities of permanent teeth, and cyst formation.
MANAGEMENT: In most cases, early extraction is the treatment of choice to prevent further damage or positional abnormalities to the surrounding teeth.
