Dry mouth is often dismissed as a minor inconvenience, but it can have important consequences for oral health.
Saliva is one of the mouth's primary protective systems. It helps neutralize acids produced by oral bacteria, washes away food debris, provides minerals that support enamel repair, and helps maintain a healthy balance of microorganisms within the mouth. When saliva flow decreases, these protective functions become less effective.
Studies have consistently shown that reduced salivary flow is associated with a higher risk of dental caries, gum disease, oral infections, and halitosis (bad breath). Without adequate saliva, harmful bacteria can accumulate more easily, acids remain in contact with teeth for longer periods, and the natural remineralization process that helps protect enamel becomes impaired.
Common causes of dry mouth include dehydration, smoking, certain medications, diabetes, autoimmune disorders such as Sjรถgren's syndrome, cancer therapies, and age-related changes in salivary gland function.
