⚠️ A Reminder About DIY Dental Products
This patient came to our clinic with pain, slight facial swelling, and gum irritation after using a heat-and-mold DIY acrylic bridge. The material adapted too tightly around the teeth and gums, causing trauma to the surrounding tissues and making removal very difficult. Since the patient was already experiencing pain even before removal, local anesthesia was needed to make the procedure more comfortable during the removal of the appliance.
DIY “temporary fixed bridge” kits bought online may seem convenient but once heated and molded improperly, they can lock into the natural undercuts of the teeth, trap bacteria, irritate the gums, and become extremely difficult to remove without professional assistance.
We’ve also encountered similar cases where patients accidentally injured their gums while trying to remove these appliances themselves. Because of poor fit and rough or unpolished edges, these appliances may also rub against and wound the gums and surrounding soft tissues during eating or normal mouth movements.
While these products are widely available online, procedures like these should not be done at home or by individuals without proper dental training. Improperly fitted DIY dental products may lead to pain, tissue injury, infection, and complications that may require emergency treatment.
For your safety, we strongly discourage the use of DIY dental materials or “heat-and-mold” appliances at home and encourage patients to seek proper evaluation and treatment from a licensed dentist instead. 🦷
