Healthy Gums May Help Keep Blood Pressure Under Control
Healthy gums are important for more than just a healthy smile. Growing research suggests they may also play a role in maintaining healthy blood pressure.
A large U.S. study found that adults with gum disease (periodontitis) were more likely to have high blood pressure that remained uncontrolled despite taking medication. They also tended to have slightly higher systolic blood pressure than people with healthy gums, and the risk increased as gum disease became more severe.
Brushing twice a day, cleaning between the teeth, having regular dental checkups, and treating gum disease early are simple steps that support a healthier mouth—and may also benefit overall cardiovascular health.
