Jaw clicking is common, but not every sound means the same thing. A click during a wide yawn is often harmless and linked to temporary joint stretching. However, clicking during normal actions like talking or chewing can indicate a deeper issue within the jaw joint.
Inside the TMJ, a small disc helps the joint move smoothly. When this disc shifts out of place, it can snap back during movement, creating the clicking sound. While it may not hurt initially, it suggests the joint isn’t functioning properly.
If the sound becomes frequent or comes with discomfort, stiffness, or locking, it’s worth addressing early. Simple steps like relaxing the jaw and avoiding strain can help reduce stress and support long-term joint health.
