BASIC DENTAL CARE

Brushing for oral health
Oral health begins with clean teeth. Keeping the area where your teeth meet your gums clean can prevent gum disease, while keeping your tooth surfaces clean can help you stave off cavities and gum disease.
Consider these brushing basics:
• Brush your teeth twice a day. When you brush, don't rush. Take about two minutes to do a thorough job. Don't brush right after eating, especially if you had something acidic such as grapefruit or soda. Don't forget to clean your tongue, which harbors bacteria, with a toothbrush or tongue scraper.
• Use the proper equipment. Use a fluoride toothpaste and a soft-bristled toothbrush that fits your mouth comfortably. Consider using an electric or battery-operated toothbrush, which can reduce plaque and a mild form of gum disease (gingivitis) more than does manual brushing. These devices are also helpful if you have arthritis or other problems that make it difficult to brush effectively.
• Practice good technique. Hold your toothbrush at a slight angle — aiming the bristles toward the area where your tooth meets your gum. Gently brush with circular short back-and-forth motions. Brushing too hard or with hard bristles can hurt your gums.

• Brush your teeth for two minutes. Remember to brush the outside, inside and chewing surfaces of your teeth, as well as your tongue.
• Keep your equipment clean. Always rinse your toothbrush with water after brushing. Store your toothbrush in an upright position and allow it to air-dry until using it again.Try to keep it separate from other toothbrushes in the same holder to prevent cross-contamination. Don't routinely cover toothbrushes or store them in closed containers, which can encourage the growth of bacteria, mold and yeast.
• Know when to replace your toothbrush. Invest in a new toothbrush or a replacement head for your electric or battery-operated toothbrush every three months — or sooner if the bristles flay or become irregular.

Flossing for oral health
You can't reach the bacteria in the tight spaces between your teeth and under the gum line with a toothbrush. That's why daily flossing is important. When you floss:
• Don't skimp. Break off about 18 inches (46 centimeters) of dental floss. Wind most of the floss around the middle finger on one hand, and the rest around the middle finger on the other hand. Grip the floss tightly between your thumbs and forefingers.
• Be gentle. Guide the floss between your teeth using a rubbing motion. Don't snap the floss into your gums. When the floss reaches your gum line, curve it against one tooth, making a c shape.
• Take it one tooth at a time. Slide the floss into the space between your gum and tooth. Use the floss to gently rub the side of the tooth in an up-and-down motion. Unwind fresh floss as you progress to the rest of your teeth.
• Keep it up. If you find it hard to handle floss, use an interdental cleaner — such as a dental pick, pre-threaded flosser, tiny brushes that reach between teeth, a water flosser, or wooden or silicone wedge plaque remover.

As long as you do a thorough job, it doesn't matter if you brush or floss first.

Other oral health care tips
In addition to daily brushing and flossing, consider using mouthwash containing fluoride to promote oral health.
Also, resist the temptation to use toothpicks or other objects that could injure your gums and let in bacteria. If you smoke, try to quit. Using to***co increases your risk of many diseases, including gum disease and tooth loss.

When to see the dentist
To prevent gum disease and other oral health problems, schedule regular dental cleanings and exams that include X-rays. In the meantime, contact your dentist if you notice any signs or symptoms that could suggest oral health problems, such as:
• Red, tender or swollen gums
• Gums that bleed when you brush or floss
• Gums that begin pulling away from your teeth
• Loose permanent teeth
• Unusual sensitivity to hot and cold
• Persistent bad breath or an unusual taste in your mouth
• Painful chewing

Remember, early detection and treatment of problems with your gums, teeth and mouth can help ensure a lifetime of good oral health.

Are Yellow Teeth a Sign of Poor Oral Health?

Are you concerned about the health of your teeth because they aren’t white? Many people think that having yellow teeth is a sign of an unhealthy smile and poor oral hygiene. While there is nothing wrong with wanting whiter teeth, there also may be nothing wrong with your oral health or oral care routine if your teeth are slightly yellowish. Here’s why:

Natural Enamel Thickness & Translucency
Enamel is on the surface of every tooth and it has a natural hue of white. However, the underlying dentin layer has a slightly yellowish color. This yellowish hue shows through the enamel in almost everyone, but more so for those with naturally thinner or more translucent enamel. So your yellow teeth may be perfectly normal due to your genetics!

What are Same Day Dentures or Immediate Dentures?

Same day, or immediate, dentures are those placed on the same day as the appointment with the dentist. They can be full or partial dentures which are inserted immediately following the extraction of the natural teeth.

What are the Advantages of Same Day Dentures?

There are quite a few advantages with an immediate denture. The most important advantage is that a person will never have to go out in public without teeth. While some of a patient’s natural teeth are still present in his or her mouth, it is also easier to duplicate the shape, color, and arrangement of the teeth. When a same day denture is installed at the time of extraction, it acts as a bandage to protect the tissues and minimize bleeding. A same day denture will allow patients to establish his or her speech patterns early. Also, patients won’t have to learn to speak without a denture, only to have to then relearn how to speak with a denture in place. A same day denture will also allow patients to chew better than without teeth present and reduce any facial distortion which can occur when teeth are removed.

How Long Does It Take to Complete?

Four to five appointments may be required for the fabrication portion of a same day denture process and any preliminary surgery will also have to take place prior to placement. For patients who need a full same day denture, the back teeth are frequently removed six to eight weeks prior to the fabrication process. The extraction sites can heal and a better-fitting same day full denture can be made. The fabrication process will consist of the collection of impressions and bite records, tooth selection and try-in of the back teeth. On the day the dentures are delivered, patients will be seen by an oral surgeon for the extraction of the appropriate teeth, followed by the immediate insertion of the same day dentures.

Can I sleep in my dentures?

Yes, you can wear your dentures at night but it is preferred that they be removed. You should remove your dentures at night and this will give your gums and bone a chance to relax from the pressure of the denture during the day. If you need to wear your dentures for social reasons or to prevent your jaws from over closing, you should find time during the day to properly clean your mouth and your prostheses. You should never wear your dentures 24 hours a day without preforming proper oral hygiene. Dentures should be cleaned at night and stored in water during the night.

Can I eat normally with dentures?

Most patients need to learn how to use dentures properly and as a result, it takes a little time to get used to them. After a while, you should be able to eat fairly normally, but it may take more time to get comfortable with harder foods or sticky foods. Using a small amount of denture adhesive (no more than three or four pea-sized dabs on each denture) may help stabilize the dentures and help hold them in place while you learn how to get comfortable with them and may make the learning process easier.

Chewing gum: Dentures and chewing gum do not usually work well together, no matter which brand of chewing gum you decide to try. The gum typically sticks to the acrylic plastic in the denture and may break a seal on the dentures, which will loosen them as a result. Gum may remain stuck to the denture and eventually harden and discolor. Ultimately, if you wear dentures, you should avoid chewing gum.
