WHAT IS AN EXPANDER?
"Palatal expansion is a combination of tooth movement and jaw expansion. It works by widening the two halves of the upper jaw, called the palate. The two halves are joined together by a "suture" in the middle of the roof of the mouth. Palatal Expanders are customized for each patient's unique mouth. An expander can be fixed (bonded to the mouth) or removable. It attaches to the upper back teeth and eases the suture apart, which makes the upper jaw wider. As the jaw expands, new bone fills in between the two halves of the palate. This process is called distraction osteogenesis. WHAT IS TMJ/TMD?
A TMJ (temporomandibular joint) appliance can relieve pain , discomfort, and stiffness in the area just in front of the ears where the upper and lower jaws connect. Although temporomandibular disorders (TMD) may improve without dental or medical care, dentists often prescribe a TMJ device to alleviate clenching or grinding of the teeth, which may aggravate TMD symptoms.

It can certainly be frustrating to have to wear a retainer after you get your braces off but it's a very important extra step. After the braces are taken off, the teeth can start moving a little more that's why you'll need retainers. Your teeth are retained in their new places for longer while you wear retainer which eventually will give you better results.
