Patient: “Doc, why do my teeth feel wobbly, sometimes more sensitive, some have even chipped, and my gums bleed easily while I’m pregnant?” 🤰🦷
Me: “That’s what we call pregnancy gingivitis. This can happen to about 70% of pregnant women.”
During pregnancy, hormonal changes increase blood flow to your gums, making them more sensitive, swollen, and prone to bleeding. These hormonal changes can also create an environment where gingivitis-causing bacteria thrive, leading to inflammation.
Additionally, these shifts can alter your oral flora, making you more susceptible to gum inflammation and cavities.
Plus, a good amount of your body’s calcium is redirected to support your baby’s development — which can contribute to weaker teeth if your calcium intake is insufficient.
That’s why maintaining good oral hygiene, a balanced diet, and regular dental check-ups during pregnancy is essential for both your health and your baby’s. 💕
🦷 When’s the best time to visit your dentist during pregnancy?
Ideally, right before you plan to conceive — this allows your dentist to address any existing dental issues early on.
But if you’re already pregnant, the second trimester (weeks 13–27) is the safest and most comfortable time for dental treatment. 💫
Routine cleanings and check-ups are perfectly safe — and highly recommended — to keep your smile healthy throughout your pregnancy. 🤍
