🦷Why Remove an Impacted Wisdom Tooth?🪥
When a wisdom tooth becomes impacted-meaning it's trapped under the gum or within the jawbone-it can lead to several significant oral health issues, which often justify removal:
1. Infection (Pericoronitis)
Partially erupted or impacted wisdom teeth can trap food debris and bacteria under the gum flap, leading to gum infections known as pericoronitis. This causes pain, swelling, bad breath, or even pus, and if untreated, can spread to facial spaces and become life-threatening (e.g., Ludwig's angina). In recurring or severe cases, extraction is usually the best solution.
2. Damage to Nearby Teeth and Bone
Impacted wisdom teeth can press against adjacent molars, potentially causing root resorption, cavities, or bone loss. They also create hard-to-clean areas, increasing the risk of decay and gum disease.
3. Cysts and Tumors
A fluid-filled cyst can form around an impacted tooth and slowly expand, damaging nearby teeth, jawbones, and nerves. Rare tumors may also develop in the surrounding tissue if left untreated.
4. Crowding and Misalignment
When wisdom teeth try to erupt without space, they in push adjacent teeth out of alignment, potentially arming orthodontic work or causing crowding.
5. Difficulty in Maintaining Hygiene
Wisdom teeth are located far in the back and are often hard to reach. This makes cleaning difficult, leading to increased risk of decay and gum disease both in the wisdom tooth and nearby teeth
Wisdom
6. Future Disease in "Silent" Teeth
Even if they cause no symptoms initially, impacted wisdom teeth can develop problems over time. Studies show that within 4 to 12 years, 30% to 60% of previously asymptomatic impacted wisdom teeth will require extraction due to disease or symptoms.
