The Philippine National Police Anti-Cybercrime Group on Monday warned the public against availing of unusually cheap dental services online, saying low-cost offers for braces are often a red flag for unlicensed or “quack” dentists.

This is what an untreated cavity actually looks like on the inside.

The darkened area at the top represents advanced tooth decay, where bacteria have eroded both the enamel and dentin layers.

Below this is the pulp chamber, which contains nerves and blood vessels — shown here inflamed and directly exposed.

At this depth, the pain is no longer a simple “toothache.” It reflects nerve inflammation, infection, and a direct pathway for bacteria to spread beyond the tooth and into the bloodstream.

Once decay reaches this stage, a routine filling is no longer sufficient. Treatment typically requires root canal therapy or tooth extraction — procedures that are more invasive, more expensive, and far more complex than early intervention.

Lives on the Line: HIV, Poverty, and the PhilHealth Betrayal

- Dr. Tony Leachon

The Department of Health has sounded the alarm: 5,000 new HIV cases were recorded from July to September, with 30% of these patients below the age of 18. This surge—representing a 500% increase among young Filipinos—demands urgent action.

Yet HIV remains taboo in our society. Silence and stigma prevent people from seeking testing, treatment, and support. Poverty deepens the crisis, as patients struggle to afford lifelong therapy. And now, with PhilHealth defunded, the safety net for the poor has been stripped away, leaving thousands vulnerable.

Prevention must be our first line of defense. Education and awareness can break the stigma. Safe practices—condom use, regular testing, and responsible sexual health—must be normalized. Young people must be empowered with knowledge, not shamed into silence.

Treatment is non‑negotiable. Antiretroviral therapy (ART) is for life, but it allows patients to live healthy, productive lives. Government must restore funding and ensure universal access to ART. Communities must rally to support patients, helping them cope with both medical and social challenges.

Every peso wasted on corruption is a peso stolen from health care, education, and the fight against HIV. The defunding of PhilHealth is not just a budgetary decision—it is a betrayal of the poor and the sick.

HIV is not a death sentence, but neglect and stigma can make it one. We must act now: break the taboo, restore funding, and protect the next generation.

A recent case involving a 3-year-old with multiple cavities and a dental abscess highlights the importance of starting oral care early. At this age, children can’t manage their own dental hygiene parents play the most critical role. Neglecting early dental care can lead to pain, infections, and long-term effects on speech, nutrition, and confidence.

Cavities in baby teeth should never be ignored. Untreated decay can cause early tooth loss, making it harder for children to eat, speak, and smile comfortably. Regular brushing with fluoride toothpaste, limiting sugary snacks, and seeing a dentist by age one are essential steps in prevention.

Children learn by example when parents make brushing a fun, shared routine, it builds lifelong healthy habits. A small effort today ensures a brighter, healthier smile tomorrow.
