Prophylaxis” is derived from the Greek word “phylax,” which means “guarding.” This is a procedure designed to prevent and lower the risk of a range of oral concerns, including tooth decay and gum disease.
Prophylaxis is recommended twice annually as a preventative measure, but should be performed every 3-4 months on periodontitis sufferers. Though gum disease cannot be completely reversed, prophylaxis is one of the tools the dentist can use to effectively halt its destructive progress.
🦷 How is oral prophylaxis done?
During a oral prophylaxis treatment, dentist will perform both scaling and polishing. During the scaling process, dental instruments are used to remove tartar, plaque, and stains from the teeth surface. This step is called supragingival cleaning.
🦷 What should I do before oral prophylaxis?
It is recommended you do not have anything to eat or drink (except for water) at least 5 hours before your scheduled appointment. This will prevent food debris from lodging in your teeth, which can irritate you during a cleaning and give your dentist a little extra work to do.
🦷 Can I brush my teeth after oral prophylaxis?
Oral prophylaxis is applicable for all ages to help fight tooth decay and gum disease. It is important to keep the oral cavity healthy thus daily oral hygiene practices, like tooth brushing and flossing, should still be done.
