The so-called triangle of death is a facial area outlined by drawing a line between the corners of the lips and joining both points at the nasal septum.

The medical importance of this area lies in the fact that blood drains through the angular vein, which connects directly with the inside of the skull. As they lack valves, these veins allow any bacteria originating from a superficial injury to travel unhindered to the cavernous sinus located at the base of the brain.

An untreated infection in this region can compromise the pituitary gland and the meninges, causing meningitis or brain abscesses that rapidly put the patient’s life at risk.
