A recent advancement in dental diagnostics has shown how Artificial Intelligence is improving the detection of hidden tooth decay in dental X-rays. Researchers found that AI-assisted systems can identify interproximal caries, cavities forming between teeth that are often difficult to detect during routine examinations.
The technology uses deep learning models known as convolutional neural networks (CNNs), trained on thousands of annotated bitewing radiographs. By analyzing subtle radiographic changes, the AI can recognize early signs of decay that may sometimes be missed during traditional manual evaluations.
Experts explain that this innovation may improve early diagnosis, support more accurate treatment planning, and help reduce human error in dental assessments. AI-assisted imaging could also create more standardized diagnostic methods across clinics, strengthening preventive dentistry and encouraging earlier intervention before problems progress further.
