Radiographic images of the before and after removal of an impacted wisdom tooth.
An impacted wisdom tooth is a tooth that does not fully erupt into its normal position because it is blocked by the surrounding bone, gum, or another tooth. In this case, the wisdom tooth was positioned sideways and unable to erupt properly. The result? Cavities/tooth decay on both the wisdom tooth itself and the tooth beside it.
Why does it need to be removed?
An impacted wisdom tooth may cause:
• Pain, swelling, or recurrent infection
• Food trapping and difficulty cleaning
• Tooth decay in the wisdom tooth or the adjacent molar
• Gum inflammation around the tooth
• Damage or resorption of the neighboring tooth
• Cysts or other complications in some cases
Removing the tooth when indicated can help prevent these problems and protect the neighboring teeth.
If you have a partially erupted or impacted wisdom tooth, don’t wait for it to become painful. Have it assessed with an appropriate dental X-ray and discuss whether removal is recommended for your case.
