It’s flu season. If you're experiencing symptoms such as cough, fever, runny nose, or sore throat, please stay home 😷 and reschedule any non-emergency dental appointments. 🦷

Remember to replace your toothbrushes after recovering. 🪄🪄

Most people recover from a cold or flu and go right back to using the same toothbrush — but that simple habit can bring the same germs right back into your mouth.
Toothbrush bristles can trap bacteria and viruses, including Streptococcus, Influenza, and even Staphylococcus aureus. Research shows these microbes can survive for days, especially in a moist bathroom environment.

Every time you brush after being sick, you risk reintroducing those pathogens to your mouth — or even spreading them to family members if toothbrushes are stored close together. The result? A higher chance of reinfection, sore throats that come back, and delayed healing.

Experts recommend tossing your toothbrush after any illness involving fever, sore throat, cold, flu, strep, or COVID-19. Replace it with a fresh one once you’re fully recovered. It’s a small but powerful hygiene upgrade that keeps your immune system focused on recovery — not fighting the same infection twice.

🪄 Pro Tip: Always store your toothbrush upright, uncovered, and away from others. A clean brush equals a cleaner mouth — and a stronger body defense.

What happens when you lose a tooth and don't replace it? Keep reading…

If you want to avoid dentures or bridges, maintain good oral health to prevent tooth loss. 🦷

A healthy smile contributes to a healthy body.

🦷 What Really Happens When a Tooth Is Lost

Losing a tooth may seem like a small problem — especially if it’s not visible when smiling — but medically, it’s a silent chain reaction that can alter the entire mouth structure.

Each tooth in the jaw supports the next like a team; when one is missing, the balance collapses. The nearby teeth start drifting or tilting toward the empty space, while the opposing tooth (from the opposite arch) begins to over-erupt into the gap. Over time, this misalignment can disturb the bite, strain the jaw joints, and even trigger chronic headaches or muscle tension.

Beneath the surface, the damage continues. The jawbone that once supported the missing tooth begins to shrink — a process called alveolar bone resorption. Without regular stimulation from chewing forces, the bone loses density, weakening facial support. This is why people with multiple missing teeth often develop a ā€œsunkenā€ facial appearance or premature facial aging.

Gum tissues also recede around the area, creating food traps and increasing the risk of gum disease and tooth decay in neighboring teeth.

Functionally, even a single missing tooth reduces chewing efficiency. The rest of the teeth have to overwork, leading to wear, cracks, or sensitivity. In long-standing cases, the uneven bite forces can even affect the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) — the hinge connecting the jaw to the skull — causing jaw pain, clicking sounds, or restricted movement.

Replacing a missing tooth promptly — whether through a dental implant, bridge, or partial denture — helps preserve bone, restore proper bite, and maintain overall oral health. What may seem like a small gap today can become a bigger, costlier dental issue tomorrow. Early replacement isn’t cosmetic — it’s preventive healthcare.

A child’s dental journey begins the moment their first tooth appears, usually around six months of age. At this stage, many parents may think cavities are a concern only for older children, but even one small tooth is vulnerable to decay. The mouth naturally harbors bacteria, and when sugars from milk or food interact with these bacteria, acids form and can damage the enamel. Early decay in baby teeth can progress quickly, causing pain, infection, and even affecting the permanent teeth developing beneath.

Introducing dental care from the very beginning is one of the best gifts you can give your child. Gently cleaning the gums before teeth erupt helps your baby get used to oral hygiene. Once the first tooth appears, using a soft baby toothbrush with a smear of fluoride toothpaste not only cleans but also strengthens the enamel. Avoiding bedtime bottles with milk or juice reduces prolonged sugar exposure during sleep, when saliva flow is low and teeth are most at risk.

The early years set the stage for a lifetime of oral health. Baby teeth may be temporary, but they hold space for adult teeth, guide proper jaw growth, and play a vital role in speech and nutrition. Scheduling a dental visit by the first birthday ensures professional guidance, early detection of any problems, and helps the child become comfortable in the dental environment from the start. Investing in those first teeth is truly investing in the future smile.
