If your aim is to have great teeth then, a quick wash of your bristles won't do the job.

The American Dental Association (ADA) provides this tip:
Start with your brush at a 45-degree angle to your gums and use short back and forth strokes across the sides and tops of your teeth.
Then, hold the brush vertically and use several shorter strokes to focus on the backs of your teeth of the front anterior teeth where plaque builds up often.

‪CLEANING YOUR INFANTS MOUTH.‬

‪Many parents often wonder when they should start cleaning their newborns mouth. ‬
‪Should they start before there is teeth or wait till the child grows a tooth ?‬

‪Well, in this short thread we will attempt to inform us on when and how to get it done. ‬

‪Your newborns mouth should be cleaned after every meal, even before the start growing teeth. Here are a few steps to follow;‬

‪1. Wash your hands thoroughly and make sure they are clean.‬

‪2. Take a small piece of clean gauze or clean cloth and wrap it around your finger .‬

‪3. Moisten the piece of gauze or cloth using warm water alone (no need to add anything to the water)‬

‪4. Gently open the baby’s mouth and rub the tongue surface in circular gentle motion.‬

‪5. After cleaning the tongue, do same for the gums and the inner cheeks .‬

‪6. Check to see that the mouth is clean. ‬
‪If there is presence of whitish coating that refuses to come off after thorough cleaning, please consult your Doctor . ‬

‪When the child gets to around 2 months of age, you can then change the gauze to a SOFT finger brush to do the cleaning. ‬

‪In our next thread, we will answer the question ”When can we start using toothbrush and toothpaste for the child”‬

‪Feel free to interact with us and kindly share.‬

FLUORIDE

Often times your Dentist will ask you what type of toothpaste you use , their major aim is to ascertain if you use a fluoride containing toothpaste. FLUORIDE is one of the most important ingredients in the toothpaste especially in this part of the world .

Not every toothpaste contains fluoride , and different toothpaste contain varying levels of fluoride .
In the next couple of tweets we shall attempt to educate us on fluoride; its mechanism of action and its safety levels.

Fluoride is a chemical that occurs naturally world wide , present in natural water and even plants . It’s effects are widespread and important at certain levels, but just like all substances excessive ingestion may be harmful.

At controlled levels , fluoride improves the strength and quality of the teeth by improving the crystalline structure of the enamel making it less susceptible to acid dissolution . It also helps to decrease the acids produced by the caries causing bacteria.

Simply put , fluoride is beneficial to both the tooth structure and against the bacteria causing tooth decay . Hence, its importance in toothpaste.

However , an excess consumption of fluoride may be harmful . Clinically excess levels of fluoride is called FLUOROSIS.

Most toothpaste come in levels of fluoride indicated on them in PPM ( parts per million ).Traditionally, our toothpaste should contain 950-1500 ppm of fluoride.

As a note of warning , it is important to use a FLUORIDE toothpaste while brushing . Also don’t allow your children to ingest and swallow toothpaste when they brush .
There are brands of toothpaste for children with lesser fluoride contents too .

Always try and patronize the Nigerian brands of toothpaste as they contain the recommended dose of fluoride for this part of the world .
However, check that the toothpaste contains FLUORIDE before using it.

Feel free to interact with us and ask questions . You can also tag your Dentist for wider reach and more explanations on fluoride.

HOW TO TELL IF YOU HAVE A MISALIGNED BITE (SYMPTOMS)

Occlusion is identified by a variety of symptoms depending on the severity of the situation. Below are the most common associative symptoms:

1).Pain and stiffness when chewing.

Patients suffering from misaligned teeth suffer from jaw pain as well as discomfort caused by stiffness of the muscles. The pain or stiffness may be coupled by persistent clicking noise in your ear as you chew.

2).Difficulty in breathing

A patient with TMJ experiences unwarranted mouth breathing even when he or she has a clear nose.

3).Speech impairments

The stiffness of the temporomandibular joints is known to cause an individual to have an uneven jaw to have problems with pronouncing particular words thus causing speech impairment in the process.

4).Frequent self-biting

Patients suffering from TMJ will frequently bite the inner side of their cheeks and tongue.

5).Alteration in facial appearance

Twisted, overcrowded, or crooked teeth are the most notable symptoms of an uneven bite as they have the ability to disfigure a smile or the midline of your face.

6).Migraine headaches

Patients with an uneven teeth alignment constantly suffer from migraine headaches caused by the teeth and jaw muscles straining to work.

7).Uneven Wear or Tooth Sensitivity

Patients with an uneven bite will suffer from irregular teeth wear. Enamel wares away much more quickly on tooth spots that go through forced grinding.

8).Loose or Failing Dental Work

Tooth loss and cavities are a common issue when dealing with improperly aligned teeth surfaces that clash against themselves.

HOW TO TEST IF YOUR BITE IS MISALIGNED

A ‘clench test’ offers the best way to test your bite. Firstly, a clench test has the ability to show if you have an uneven bite in the form of an overbite, underbite, cross bite or open bite through distinct discomfort on any part of the teeth. Secondly, a clench test has the ability to highlight tooth sensitivity as continued grinding wears out enamel consequently reducing sensitivity.
